Robert S. Nolte

1922 – 2013

Robert S. Nolte, 91, formerly of Silver Star, died peacefully at his home in Butte on July 23.
Robert was born May 3, 1922, at Silver Star to Otto Carl and Bernice Jane (Bonawitz) Nolte. In his early years, he attended the Silver Star school. He then worked on his grandfather’s ranch at Silver Star for a short period of time before beginning his career as a miner, which spanned over 40 years. His pride and joy was developing his own mine and seeing it come to fruition. While working as a miner, Robert continued to ranch, work as a homebuilding contractor and as an electrician.
He married Lucille Redfern on June 17, 1945, in Butte. She preceded him in death on October 18, 2011.
He enjoyed trapping, hunting, camping and prospecting. Robert was a lifetime member of the Twin Bridges Fire Department and was a devoted member of the Masonic and Eastern Star Lodge.
Robert was a very caring, kind and generous person. He and his wife opened their home to many of the children of the community, sometimes for extended periods of time. They always considered them as family and even had extra room in the house during holidays for others to join them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lucille, his two brothers, Fred and George Nolte, and a son-in-law, Dan Owsley.
Survivors include his children: Jean Ann Balzar, of Reno, NV; Carol (Dick) York, of Florence; Robert (Betty) Nolte, of Wright, WY; Doug (Karla) Nolte, of Hotchkiss, CO; and Ed (Donna) Nolte, of Twin Bridges. He is also survived by his sister, Jane “Bebe” (Don) Mantha, of Twin Bridges.
His pride and joy were his 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and one great great-grandson.
Memorials may be made to the Bob and Lucille Nolte Scholarship Fund at Twin Bridges High School or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
