Grace K. Osborn

1923-2013

Grace K. Osborn, 89, passed away peacefully at the Tobacco Root Mountain Care Center in Sheridan on February 6, 2013.
Grace was born September 7, 1923, to Ed and Emma (Shaw) Knox in Dillon.  She spent the first four years of her life at the Jake Place in the Blacktail Creek Valley.  Her family then “moved to town” to Dillon, where she grew to adulthood. Grace graduated from high school in 1941 and from the Montana State Normal School at Dillon in 1943 with a teaching certificate.
While in grade school, with a couple of years of lessons and many hours of practice, Grace became very proficient on both piano and organ. She continued to use this talent throughout her life for individuals, civic and church groups all over southwestern  Montana.
During Grace’s first teaching job in Neihart, she married Lewis “Toad” Osborn, a soldier on furlough from Alaska. They had known each other for several years but didn’t get serious until Toad was drafted into the Army in 1940.  After finishing the school year in Neihart, she followed Toad to Ft. Lewis, WA, where he was posted. Grace soon had a job for the State of Washington at the capitol building in Olympia.
Soon after WWII was over, Grace and Toad returned to southwestern Montana. In 1946, they moved to the Ruby Valley, where they remained for the rest of their lives.
Grace then took on the job of mother and housewife. During the school term of 1959, Grace was approached by the Alder Grade Board to temporarily fill in for an ill teacher.  Thus began her second teaching career. Grace taught at the Alder Grade School for the next 27 years. Attending summer school each year, she graduated with her oldest son and daughter-in-law from Western Montana College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1969.
Grace retired from teaching in 1987.  Grace and Toad enjoyed traveling and motored over most of the US by car and flew to Europe and Boston to visit relatives. After Toad’s death, Grace continued traveling to many places, including Washington DC and Alaska (twice).
Grace was an active member in Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, American Legion Auxiliary, and ADK teacher sorority.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Toad, and brother, Bruce.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan of Denver, CO, and her sons Charlie (Amy) of Sidney and Ed (Judi) of Alder; her grandchildren Amora (Leonard) Magnus of Ohio, Kaleen (John) Beckwith of Ohio, Dan (Katie) Osborn of Alaska and Jon (Emily) Osborn of Lewistown; and by six great grandchildren. Grace is also survived by her sister, Jessie Simonsen, and sister-in-law, Janet Know, as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be scheduled at a later date for early summer.  Memorial donations can be made to Daughters of the Nile (special projects) PO Box 786, Jackson, MT 59736; Tobacco Root Mountain Care Center in Sheridan; Ruby Valley Ambulance in Sheridan, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
