Ray Miotke
1946 - 2011

On April 11, with muck to be hauled, holes to be drilled, and rounds to be loaded and shot, the time had come for this miner to “digger out” for his last shift.
Ray was born in Watertown, S.D., to Frank and Elsie (Walter) Miotke on Aug. 12, 1946.
Upon graduating from Twin Bridges High School, Ray joined the Navy in September of 1965. Ray proudly served his country during Vietnam on the USS Kitty Hawk, and was honorably discharged in 1971.
Ray began his lifelong career of underground mining working along side his dad, Frank. Frank taught Ray once mining is in your blood, it’s there forever.
Ray worked in many mines throughout Montana, but in 1986 he settled in for a 25-year career with Stillwater Mining Company in Nye. While at Stillwater Mining Company, Ray taught and mentored many young kids, and every one of them held a special place in Ray’s heart.
On Feb. 16, 1980, Ray married the love of his life and soulmate, Beverly, and became a dad to Michele and Mike.
Through trials and tribulation, Ray made our family one, and all these years later we still couldn’t pull the wool over our dad’s eyes! Ray’s love for his wife and children was no hidden secret to anybody.
On Feb. 16, 2001, along with a 21st wedding anniversary to celebrate, Ray became a very proud grandpa to Carlee Dawn. Ray loved his granddaughter with as much love as a grandpa can give his pride and joy.
Ray looked forward to joining his brothers Bob, Jim and Dennis, son Mike, and his many nephews, at a hunting camp in Hells Canyon for a week of hunting each year. Oh, the stories we will tell for generations. Ray also enjoyed golfing, weekly bingo night, and his involvement with Beartooth VFW Post #7311.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Beverly, Absarokee; daughter, Michele Orlich, Absarokee; son, Mike Orlich, Spokane, Wash.; granddaughter, Carlee Walters, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; sisters, Gladys Jessop, Boulder, Evelyn Hansen, Butte, Sharon (Dave) Pumalo, Florence, Cathy (John) Shephard, Boulder, and Connie (Tom) Hyndman, Twin Bridges; brothers, Bob (Linda), Three Forks, Jim (Robin), Frenchtown, and Dennis (Caroline), Twin Bridges; sisters-in-law, Connie (Curt) Skeslien, Butte, Gloria (Owen) Perala, New York Mills, Minn., Michelle Kasun, Butte, and Colleen O’Donnell, Butte; brothers-in-law, Tim (Mary) O’Donnell, Whitehall, Dennis O’Donnell, Butte, Sam Miller, Whitehall; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews, along with all his friends and co-workers at Stillwater Mining Company.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elsie Miotke, and his children’s grandmother, Helen Orlich.
A memorial fund has been established at United Bank of Absarokee, P.O. Box 480, Absarokee, MT 59001, to be distributed to Absarokee Ambulance, Absarokee Fire, Beartooth VFW Post #7311 and Kruizin’ 4 Seniors.
A celebration of Ray’s life will be held Saturday, April 23, at the Absarokee Fire Hall beginning at 3 p.m.
