Thomas J. Harman

1951-2012

Thomas Joseph Harman passed away Wednesday August 29th.  Tom was born on March 16, 1951 in Harrisburg PA to Joseph and Betty Harman. He spent time and was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1972.  He proudly served in the Red Horse unit.
There was a celebration of Tom’s life on Tuesday, September 4th   at the home he shared with Kathy.  Tom was cremated, which will allow his friends to take him on his last adventure and finish the finalchapter of his life.
In March of 2005, he met Kathy Elliott, the love of his life and after two first dates in the same day, they were inseparable, spending the next 7 and half years together.   Kathy survives along with her children and extended family, Kandis and Stacy Olson, Kris Loomis (Chelsea Carter) and two grandchildren, Gage Hoerning and Kylee Campbell.  Tom is also survived by a brother Steve Harman from Elizabethville PA and greatest of friends, Tom Leeming of Ennis, George Goody and Kyle Nye of Dillon
Tom was a master fly tyer concentrating on putting his own spin on Hair woven George Grant flies.  He spent many weekends and hours teaching fly tying and passing the art onto the next generation.  He was always a presence at the Ennis Fly Fishing Festival and the Idaho Falls Fly Fishing Expo.  He also lent his talent to the “Kids on the Bighole” day event.
Tom was a passionate outdoor enthusiast and was always looking for an adventure.    His true calling was riding around the country on two wheels. Tom often bragged about his solo Alaska trip doing 7000 miles in 14 days.  He and Kathy had many wonderful trips on the bike, which will always be remembered and treasured.  Even Moxie dog rode on the bike and Tom called her “the beamer wiener” after that.
In 2011, they purchased their first Goldwing and rode several trips around the country in total comfort.  Tom loved so many things, especially fishing, which brought himto Montana in 1989 when he purchased the fly shop in Sheridan, promptly naming it Harman’s Fly Shop.  He spent until 2005 in Sheridan when he sold the real estate and moved to Dillon with Kathy.  In 2006, he and Kathy moved to Boise for his “dream” job at Cabela’s.  They returned to Montana in 2008 and after working at Uncle Bob’s for a short time, he became employed at Cortland Line Company as a regional sales manager for Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and at the time of his death, had taken on Washington and Oregon as part of his territory.
Tom loved so many things, most of all Kathy and their dachshund Moxie. He also loved doughnuts, microbrews andall things outdoors.
Memorials can be made to Trout Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, and Ducks Unlimited, The Big Hole River Foundation or the outdoor association of your choice.
Ride Safe and Tight Lines, Tommy!
