David Stewart

1921-2009

David Alma Stewart, 88, died peacefully Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009.

Funeral services will be held this Saturday, Nov. 28, at 11 a.m. at Lindquist Kaysville Mortuary, 400 N. Main St., Kaysville, Utah, with Bishop David George officiating. Family and friends may call Friday, 6-8 p.m., and Saturday, 9:45-10:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Kaysville City Cemetery.

He was born Sept. 6, 1921, in the family home in West Kaysville, Utah, to Alma Muffin and Camilla Barnes Stewart.

On Feb. 18, 1942 he married Ronella Lalliss in the Logan, Utah, LDS temple. He served an LDS mission in Northern California.

As an only child, he was a third-generation pioneer in West Kaysville, where he owned and operated a family dairy farm. While in Utah, he was instrumental in getting a pressurized water system in the Haight Creek Irrigation Co. to Kaysville and Fruit Heights. He was also the president of the irrigation company for eight years, a director in the Cache Valley Dairy Co., president of the Davis Co-op System and director for Farm Credit Services.

In 1977, he realized his lifelong dream of owning a cattle ranch when he purchased a ranch at Glen, Mont., where he lived until April of this year. In Montana, he was a director in the Farm Credit, president of the Snowline Grazing Association and a director of the 3-River Telephone Cooperative.

Dave is survived by his widow; three sons, Fred (Wilma), Lyle and Rob (Ronda), all of Glen; a daughter, Pauline (Tom) Brough of Layton, Utah; 17 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Jack (Peggy), and a daughter, Judy (Rick) Mayfield.




Viola Giem

1917-2009

Viola Mason Giem, 92, of Twin Bridges died Nov. 19, 2009, at the Tobacco Root Mountain Care Center at Sheridan.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 28, at 1 p.m. at the Church of the Valley at Twin Bridges with Rev. Ben Nardi officiating. Interment will follow at the Point of Rocks Cemetery at Twin Bridges.

K&L Mortuaries of Twin Bridges is assisting with arrangements.

Viola was born near Shelby on June 10, 1917 to Norman Orr Mason and Nora Alice Hill. They moved to Troy when she was one year old. She attended school in Troy, graduating in 1935. She moved to Spokane, Wash., where she attended business college until obtaining employment with the Spokane Review and Daily Chronicle newspapers.

On Nov. 12, 1939, she married James Edgar Giem in Spokane, and they moved to the ranch at Twin Bridges, where they lived and worked until he died on Oct. 6, 1997.

She was a member of Daisy Chapter 20 of the Order of Eastern Star for over 50 years and secretary for over 30 years. She also belonged to Paigeville Club, Duncan District Club, Square Dance Group, Rainbow Matron, and the Ladies Aid for the Church of the Valley. She supported the church bazaar with many knitted, crocheted, and crafted items. Viola moved from the ranch to the Waterford in Butte in November 2004. In March 2009 she moved to the Tobacco Root Mountain Care Center in Sheridan.

Viola was preceded in death by her husband and parents, and also by all of her siblings, Norman Benton Mason, Zelva May Burtchin, Genevieve “Jenny” Belva Dunnigan, Gerald “Jerry” Velton Mason, Harold George Mason, Melba Inez Bellezza and an infant sister.

Surviving are: daughter Marcia (Bill) Tyson, grandson Lance (Nancy) Tyson, and great-grandchildren Seth and Nichole, granddaughter Schalene (Geoff) Darr, and great grandchildren Hayden, Nolan, Jordan, and Sophia, all of Gardiner, grandson Calvin (Alex) Tyson, and great-grandsons Cade and Cooper of Billings, son Norman (Rosa) Giem of Kauai, Hawaii and Peru, grandchildren Kelly of Peru and Elkie (Chris) Bryce of Helena, son Loren (Carol) Giem of Twin Bridges, grandchildren Lindsay (Bob) Seidensticker and great-grandson James of Twin Bridges, and Gregory (Mollie) Giem and great-grandson Jacob of Houston, Texas, son Dale (Jennifer) Giem and grandchildren Mason of California, Henry and Alice of Twin Bridges. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Viola (Ole) Korn of Butte, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials are preferred to the Church of the Valley, Twin Bridges, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.




Stanley Vlahovich Jr.

1958 – 2009

Stanley Vlahovich Jr., formerly of Dillon, died Nov. 14, 2009, at his home in Palmer, Alaska.

Stan was born on June 3, 1958, in Anaconda to the late Georgia and Stanley Vlahovich Sr. He graduated from Anaconda Central High School, Montana School of Mines and the University of Montana.

Stan had a long-time career in forestry and fire, starting with the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation. In 2001 he fulfilled a life-long dream of moving to Alaska, where he worked as a stewardship forester for the Alaska Department of Natural Resources. He was well known within the fire community.

Stan met Jeanne, whom he called his “lovely wife”, in 1981 and they were married in 1982, making a family with Jeanne’s daughter Kim. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and participating in his hobbies of hunting, fishing, and traditional archery. He loved to learn and share his knowledge. He will be missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving Stan are his wife, Jeanne; daughter and son-in-law, Kim (Joel) Albea, of Sheridan, Wyo.; grandsons, Brandon and Evan Albea; and his brother, Robert Vlahovich.

Services were held at Kehl’s Funeral Home in Palmer, on Sunday, Nov. 22. An additional service will be held in Montana at a later date to be announced.

Memorials may be made to the Traditional Archers of Alaska (c/o Vikki Gross, HC 31, Box 5147, Wasilla, AK, 99654), or to a local Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation chapter.
