Catherine Bryan
1921 - 2012

Catherine Bryan ,90, of Glen, died of natural causes at home Wednesday, Feb. 15, with family at her side.
Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Brundage Funeral Home in Dillon. Burial followed in Mountain View Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Brundage Funeral Home.
Catherine Mayme Bryan was born the eighth of 12 children in Argenta on July 21, 1921, to Colin MacDonald and Lulu (Knapp) MacDonald.
Kate grew up in Argenta, and in Butte, when Butte was a hard scrabble mining town, during the 1920s and the Great Depression of the 1930s.
The family, with 12 children, became more desperate when their father Colin, a Butte miner, died of consumption when Kate was just 14 years old. The hardships faced by the children growing up tended to draw them closer throughout their lives. Kate loved to talk to her sisters and kid brothers on the phone, and keep apprised of the goings on with their families.
Catherine married William (Billy) Bryan in Butte on June 3, 1940. Daughter Iris was born on Nov. 29, 1941. Catherine was in the Hospital with Iris when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Billy entered the U.S. Army in 1943, and fought in Europe until the war ended.
Catherine, with her husband overseas, spent the war with her mother-in-law, Maggie Bryan, and sister-in-law, Janey Bryan, at the their ranch on the Big Hole River. This was quite a change, coming from the big city of Butte, and wasn't without some adjustment. With a young daughter in tow, and two older women to help, they not only spent the last part of the war together, but got to know each other quite well. Upon Billy's return from the war, they bought a ranch on the Big Hole River at Glen. Son Frank was born Dec. 16, 1946.
Billy and Catherine were married 63 years upon his death in 2003.
Catherine loved life, she had many friends throughout the area. When Kate's grandkids were young she would play with them as if a child herself. She would lay with them on the floor and color with crayons, or fight off pretend enemies from behind a big rock. A break in the fighting meant opening the basket and having a picnic. Kate loved kids, she enjoyed hosting tea parties with neighboring children.
Catherine kept a nice house and was second to none in the kitchen; no one went hungry at Kate's table. For many years Catherine also worked as a cook at Parkview Acres Nursing Home. Kate had a heart as big as the sky above. Never a person, dog, cat, bird, bum calf or any creature went hungry under Kate's watchful eye. She had a green thumb and an ability to grow flowers almost anywhere.
Kate fulfilled a life long dream in 1996, visiting Nova Scotia, the place of her father's birth. There she met many cousins, and developed relationships with family that heretofore she had only heard about.
Catherine and family celebrated five living-generations recently, the story and picture appeared in the Dillon Tribune.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy; parents, Colin and Lulu; three brothers, Colin, Donald and Danny MacDonald; six sisters, Clara Lively, Sara Leoni, Montana Heilig, Florence Croff, Sidney Naglus and Estelle Robertson.
Survivors include her children, Frank (Carol) Bryan, Glen, and Iris (Bill) Price, Great Falls; grandchildren, Brian (Pat) Scott, Suzette (Leslie) Sherrard, Erin (Troy) Voeller, Billi (Lance) Broadbent and Samantha Price; great-grandchildren Cassie (Josh) Kauffman, Nikki Voeller, Morgan Broadbent, Reese Broadbent, Christopher Voeller, Erin (David) Cole and Katy (Jordan) Reasoner; great-great-grandchildren, Sawyer Kauffman, Chase and Ripley Reasoner, and Ari Barrett; a brother, H.R. MacDonald, Pasco, Wash.; and a sister, Iris Dean, Fontana, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews; dear friends, Barb and John Hopper; and faithful companion, Sparky.
Memorials are suggested to Barrett Hospice and Home Health Care, 90 Highway 91 South, Dillon, MT 59725.

She was born on Sept. 4, 1932, to Floyd Davis and Edith Alder Davis in Dillon.
When Hazel, her sister Dolores, and brother Buzzy (Raymond) were young children, their parents passed away. Floyd’s brother, Loren Davis, and his wife, Florence, assumed guardianship of the young Davis children, and raised them in Dillon.
They became loving siblings of Loren and Florence’s four older children, Dorothy Ann, Bill, Lloyd and Carl.
Hazel married Hewitt Martinell in 1949, and to this union Diane, John and Edie were born and reared in Dillon.
Hewitt preceded Hazel in death in 1955.

Hazel traveled throughout Montana and Wyoming to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She continued her nursing career at the Wyoming Retirement Center in Basin, Wyo., and the Sweet Memorial Nursing Home in Chinook. Hazel retired in 1992.
Hazel played a mean rag-time piano, collected beautiful antiques, and followed the dinosaur tracks in Wyoming. She also enjoyed quilting, scrap-booking, making potpourri, and listening to country music.
Hazel took pride in the numerous hand-sewn porcelain doll dresses she made for friends and family, using remnants from family member’s clothing. She loved baking cookies to share with her family.
