Donald Philip Harrington

1925 – 2013

Longtime Pepsi bottler, Donald Philip Harrington, 88, passed away at his ranch home in Dillon on September 30, of natural causes. He was born to Philip and Dorothy (Rooney) Harrington in Butte on April 20, 1925.
Raised in Butte, Don graduated from Boys Central in 1942. While serving our country for four years in the Navy during WWII, he was able to travel around the world. He graduated with a business degree from the University of Montana in 1950. After gaining experience in odd jobs, he went to work for his father at the family Pepsi bottling business in Butte in 1953. His family started the first franchise for Pepsi-Cola in the state of Montana in 1937. Don managed Harrington Bottling Company until this summer, often commuting from the ranch in Dillon. He treasured and thought of his faithful Pepsi employees as his extended family.
Don’s love of horses, ranching and rodeo began in his teens with visits to Hugh Murphy’s ranch in Brown’s Gulch. Helping start the Univ. of Montana Rodeo Team, he competed in bareback riding and calf roping. He started announcing rodeos when another announcer didn’t show up and often announced while competing at the rodeo. He announced rodeos from California to Canada, including the National High School Rodeo Finals, the National College Rodeo Finals, and the NFR. Known as Mr. Pepsi, Don had many colorful friends from the rodeo world. They were friendships that last forever.
Don was inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City in 2002 as the recipient of the Ben Johnson Award. This year, Don was honored by the American Quarter Horse Assn. for registering Quarter Horse foal crops for 50 consecutive years.
Don and his family owned and operated a ranch in Sheridan before expanding to the current location in Beaverhead County. He enjoyed his time at the ranch working with his cattle and horses. He loved working with the horses and seeing the new colt crops each spring. He took great joy in seeing the horses he raised succeed in the rodeo, horse show and ranch worlds. He donated young horses each year to the MSU, UMW and 4-H to help their equine programs.
Don’s generosity and kindness was known country wide. He supported many colleges, schools, clubs and organizations with his expertise, time, donations and Pepsi products. He donated the property for the Butte Saddle Club and also for the future Veteran’s Home in Butte. He helped many people and organizations without anyone knowing about it and never sought recognition.
Don was a member and served on the boards of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Assn., the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, the National Bottlers Assn., the Montana State Bottlers Assn., The Pepsi-Cola Bottlers Assn. and others. He was also a member of the Montana Quarter Horse Assn., BPOE and Exchange Club, along with serving on bank and other organization boards.
Don and Shirley took many trips through their rodeo and Pepsi-Cola connections. Traveling to China, Japan and many locations in Europe with friends in the soft-drink industry, they enjoyed seeing the world and the U.S. in their travels together.
Preceding Don in death were: his parents, Phil and Dorothy; his brother, John; and his sister, Dorothy Jean Holguin. Don is survived by: his wife of 58 years, Shirley (Davis); brother-in-law George Davis; daughter Lynn (Fred Hirschy); and granddaughters Murphy, Brooke and Cate Hirschy; son Mark (Barb); grandson Matt (Alli); and granddaughters Anne and Becci Harrington.
There was a Memorial Mass on Friday, Oct. 4 at  St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Butte. Interment will be held at a later date.  Memorials may be made to: Dillon Home Health/Hospice, 600 Highway 91 S., Dillon, MT  59725; Shriners Hospital Travel Fund c/o Bagdad Temple, 314 W. Park St., Butte, MT  59701; Butte Salvation Army, 1229 Harrison Ave., Butte, MT  59701; or to a charity of the donor’s choice. A guestbook is available online at www.brundagefuneralhome.com.

August John Schreiber

1920 – 2013

August John Schreiber, 93, of Dillon passed away on the morning of September 30.
Funeral services will be on Friday, Oct. 11, at 2:30 p.m. at Brundage Funeral Home, with Pastor David Andrew officiating. Graveside services with military honors will immediately follow.
There will be a visitation at the funeral home tomorrow 6–8 p.m.
Gus was born in May1920 in Aurora IN, where he graduated high school. In 1939, he enlisted in the Marines and served his country with pride in the Pacific on Guadalcanal with the 1st Marine Division. He achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant and was released from the military in 1945, along with many others from “America’s greatest generation.”
In 1941, he married the love of his life, Virginia, and they had two wonderful daughters who blessed Gus and Virginia with five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, as each one is a blessing.
Gus moved back to Indiana and opened a sporting goods store and fell in love with the Western part of America while hunting. Later, he moved his family out West as he had dreamed of doing and bought a small farm in Dillon. This small farm was a huge part of his life, as he loved to watch what he worked for grow and flourish. Gus loved to hunt and fish and was exceptionally lucky to be able to enjoy these activities until the last few years of his life.
As most farmers do, he had to have a second job to afford to farm. Gus helped keep Montana’s roadways safe and open to the public working for the highway department until he retired. Throughout his farming and employment on the highway, he made many great friends.
Aside from work and family, Gus loved God, as could be seen easily if the time was taken to spend with him. Gus enjoyed reading the Bible and fully understanding the messages. It was obvious that he understood the messages, as talking religion and politics were some of his favorite pastimes.
Gus’s wife, Virginia Schreiber, sister Alberta Lee and daughter Theola Watkins preceded Gus in death. His surviving family will cheerfully carry on his legacy.

Ellen Knox Fleming

1921 – 2013

Ellen Knox Fleming  was born May 22, 1921, to William D. and Ethel A. Knox, homesteaders on Sage Creek near Dell, and attended the one-room schoolhouse in Dell that is now The Yesterday’s Cafe.  She graduated from Beaverhead County High School in Dillon in 1939.
Ellen was a delight to all who knew her.  Despite all her many losses over the years, she maintained a positive outlook on life and a really keen sense of humor.
Ellen married Thomas James (Jim) Carpita in 1940. One of her memories of Jim is when they lived in a boxcar next to the railroad tracks. They had three sons: James; David; and John. Jim died Aug. 17, 1946, two weeks before John was born. Ellen and the three boys lived in Dillon after his death.
On May 4, 1957, Ellen married Leo C. Flint and they moved to Helena. Leo worked for the Forest Service. To this union two sons were born, Dale Patrick and Gary Leon. Dale died at the age of two weeks. Leo and Gary were both killed in a car accident near Dillon on Memorial Day 1970.
On Valentine’s Day 1973, Ellen married Deforest Thompson. They resided in Helena. Deforest died in November 1974. Leo and Deforest played together for dances in the Centennial Valley in their younger days.
Ellen married Richard A. Fleming in May 1982.  Richard died in September 2006.
Ellen’s survivors include: sons James R. Carpita (Anne, who died in October 2010) of Helena, David D. Carpita (Nitokrees) of St. Remy, France, and John W. Carpita (Linda) of Issaquah, WA; brother Carl (Shirley) Knox of Lima; sisters Marie Gibbons of Portland, Alice (James) Brown and Anna Jeanne (Dave) Moss, all of Lima. Another sister, Gertrude (Dick) Gosman preceded her in death.
Eight grandchildren survive. Two grandsons preceded her in death, Jeffrey Carpita and James Anthony Carpita. She is survived by 12 great-grandsons and six great- granddaughters.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, October 5, 2013, at Grace United Methodist Church, 131 E. Bannack St. in Dillon. A reception will follow the service at the church. Burial will be held at Mountain View Cemetery, Dillon, next to Leo Flint, after the reception. Edwin K. Rose

1953 – 2013

Edwin K. “Ed” Rose, 60, of Lima, passed away Friday, September 20, 2013, in the mountains that he knew and loved.
Ed was born in Rexburg, ID, to Stanford and Eleanor “Vadnais” Rose on Feb. 23, 1953. He grew up in Lima and never strayed very far or for very long from home. He attended school in and graduated from The Lima School.
Ed married Nora Jean Miller and they were blessed with three beautiful boys—“the 3 Js,” Jackson, Jason and Justin.
Ed and Nora Jean parted ways and have remained friends through the years. Ed was then married to Dorothy Selby and they were together for several years. Their journey began in their school days and their mutual fondness has endured as well.
Ed was always tireless and energetic. He worked harder than most anyone we know and did it well! Ed worked for several years for his aunt and uncle at Ralph’s Exxon in Lima. His real career began when he became a “railroader.” He worked almost thirty years as a brakeman and conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad, primarily out of Dillon. After leaving the UP, he workedfor many cattle ranchers in and around the Lima area, to include the Big Hole. There, he spent some busy and snowy days and nights feeding cows and helping with the calving seasons. He also swung a mean ax and could fell just about any tree you pointed out!
The biggest love of Ed’s life, excluding his family, was the mountains of Montana, Patsy Cline and Jim Reeves. Never forget Eddy Arnold either! He spent every extra minute he had hunting, fishing, trapping and just generally enjoying the great outdoors. He had a sheepwagon that he used for camping and kept in great condition, so it was ready to go whenever he was—and he was always ready to go!  He was a familiar sight on many of the back roads of our great area surrounding Lima. His sense of humor and great smile will be remembered always!  I guess we have to include in his many favorites, much to the chagrin of some of his family members, the Dallas Cowboys. He was a lifelong fan and many a TV suffered over any loss they encountered over the years. Oh, he was dedicated!
Ed is survived by: sons Jackson, Justin and Jason; brother Jack (Nancy) Rose; seven grandchildren; three nieces; and many cousins and extended family members. He also leaves behind his beloved dog and constant companion, Starr.  Ed will be also be remembered by his girlfriend, Emily Richards, and her children, especially William and Melodee Ewing.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents, as well as bu many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Cremation has taken place and, at Ed’s request, there will be no services.
We will miss but never forget him!  “Happy hunting Edrow!”

Duane David Simon

1936 – 2013

Duane David Simon, 76, a house designer and landscape consultant, died Sunday, Sept. 22, in his Cedar City, UT, home after a long illness. Born Dec. 12, 1936, in Dillon, Duane never forgot his roots, even though he and his wife moved to Utah in 1983. He remained involved with his hometown, most recently designing a performance pavilion project for the downtown Jaycee Park, which he originally designed in 1972. The park won a national convention “Project of the Year” award for the local Jaycees in 1974.
Passionately interested in adaptive reuse of buildings and in solar energy, Duane had a varied career. Highlights included a 2005 first-place Iron County Parade of Homes design and a 1999 national first-place recognition for a “Third Millennium Home” he designed as a member of a Dona Ana Branch Community College (New Mexico) team. In 1996, he was project manager for the completion of the Parowan, Utah, Heritage Park. He designed an addition for the University Mountain Center of Southern Utah University (SUU) in 1991 and planned and supervised construction of a solar-enhanced Habitat for Humanity home in Logan, UT, in 1989. He also worked as a painting contractor in Dillon, a landscape architect with the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, and a Cedar City’s Public Works inspector.
A lifelong learner, Duane held degrees from Montana State University and had completed coursework at SUU, Utah State, Washington State and Western Montana College. He was very close to finishing an additional degree in the SUU engineering department.
Survivors include: his wife, Julie (Clark) Simon, of Cedar City; a sister, Mona Burns, of Costa Mesa, CA; a sister-in-law, Janice Simon, of Fairmont, MN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: his parents, AJ and Louis (Ohm) Simon; a sister, Sharon; and a brother, Ray.
Southern Utah Mortuary is handling arrangements for cremation. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, in Cedar City’s St. Jude’s Episcopal Church. An additional memorial will be held this summer in Dillon.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Duane’s name to the Kanab Best Friends Animal Society (go to http://bestfriends.org/ and follow the “donate” link, indicating Duane as the person being honored and providing simon@suu.edu as the notification link) or to the SUU Department of Engineering Technology (go to http://www.suu.edu/ad/advancement/giving.html). Online condolences can be made at www.sumortuary.com.

Bonnie Mae Megquier Brown

1932 – 2013

Bonnie Mae Megquier Brown was born at her parent’s home in Dillon on November 5, 1932. She was the youngest child and daughter of Bertellow (Bert) Winfield Megquier and Bertha Carms Megquier. Bonnie was the joy of the family and had many wonderful friends growing up. Bonnie's father, Bert, a sixth-grade graduate from Libby, became the manager of the DI hardware, and Bonnie was his bookkeeper after graduating high school and taking some business courses at Western Montana College.
Bonnie met Conger Brown at her job while he was visiting his parents, Samuel Conger and Evelyn Brown, who were then managing the P&O Rock Island Ranch. Bonnie and young Conger were soon married in Duncan, OK, on September 22, 1952. Making their home in Dillon, the newlyweds had three sons: Scott, Stace and Vernon.
Bonnie contracted acute encephalitis in 1962 and went into a coma for six weeks. She fought hard to regain her life and family but never recovered. Bonnie was taken care of by her parents, Bert and Bertha, until 1987, when she entered the Tobacco Root Mountain Care Center in Sheridan. The last several years, Bonnie had been at Parkview Acres in Dillon, where she had several friends and many dear and caring staff members looking after her. She was always smiling, upbeat and never complained.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her sisters, Irene and Isabelle; her brother, Ray; and her parents, Bert and Bertha.
She is survived by: sons Scott Brown of Dillon, Stace (Marie) of Tulsa OK, and Vernon (Dee) of Montrose CO; her faithful nieces, Kay Jacobsen (Daryll) of Wisdom and Raycille (Jack) Dawson of Boulder; grandchildren Bert, Steven, Ryan, Mike, Lisa and Jake Brown; great nephews and niece Guy Peterson, Matt Dawson and Trudy Dawson. Bonnie was a wonderful mother and friend, always ready with a smile and a good word. She will be greatly missed.
Funeral services were held in Dillon on Monday. A guestbook is available online at www.brundagefuneralhome.com.

Robert M. McFarlane

1921 – 2013

“Mr. Mac” completed his earthly chores on a Sunday morning at 9:30 on Aug. 18 and went home to spend eternity with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We celebrate his life lived with passion and determination to love God, his family and friends above himself.
Dad devoted his life to loving and serving kids and families. Upon graduation from Seattle Pacific College in 1949, he became a coach and teacher at King’s Garden, a private school in Seattle. In 1952, Bob and his wife, Doris, moved to Worland, WY, to become a teacher and assistant administrator at the Wyoming State Industrial School.
In May 1957, in response to the Lord’s call and the vision of Franklin Robbie, Bob and Doris loaded their 1952 Ford sedan with their two kids and headed from Worland to a 160 acre farm west of Billings to help start Yellowstone Boys Ranch.
Like many of “the greatest generation,” they were willing to risk everything because of their love for kids and desire to see them find love, hope and success. They had a dream but never could have imagined what would be realized over the next 56 years. Dad’s faith and stubborn persistence has left an amazing legacy.
Many of you got to know Dad personally over the years. He was always prepared to share his passion for the kids and mission of Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch. We want to celebrate his life. If you have memories and personal experiences that you would like to share, please email them to glennmc@ybgr.org or mail them to 1732 S. 72nd Street W. Billings 59106. We would like to save them as a memorial to his devotion to kids and families.
A celebration of Mr. Mac’s life will be held Saturday, August 31, at 10 a.m. at Faith Chapel in Billings. Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary is assisting with arrangements.
The family requests that memorials be sent to Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch Foundation, 2050 Overland Ave., Billings, MT 59102.

Marie Lorraine (Lahd) Brewer

1920 – 2013

Marie Lorraine (Lahd) Brewer, 93, of Dillon passed away Aug. 14, 2013, at Legacy Senior Living in Dillon. She was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, on July 18, 1920, the youngest of John and Helen Lahd’s eight children.
At the age of three, she moved with her family to a farm near Fishtail. During her childhood, her family moved several more times. She graduated from Fergus County High School in 1938. After receiving a teaching permit from Billings Normal School, she taught in rural schools in Meagher County, including the Ringling School. In Ringling, she met William Brewer and they married on Aug/ 5, 1947. Together they raised six children. Bill’s employment with the Milwaukee Railroad resulted in many moves over the course of their lives together.
After her husband passed away in 1989, Marie remained in Ringling for several years. Due to the distance for medical care, she moved to the Homestead Manor in Townsend, and then to Choteau, where she resided at the Skyline Lodge. In 2011, she made her last move to Legacy Senior Living in Dillon.
Marie greatly loved children and enjoyed being a homemaker. She was an excellent cook and loved to bake Norwegian goodies. She always had a huge garden and spent hours canning and preserving fruits and vegetables for her family. She was an avid reader and liked nothing better than to play board and card games. Her favorite was pinochle, which she enjoyed even to the last days of her life.
Marie loved to visit and entertain family and friends with her stories and conversation.
She was raised in a generation that valued old-time family traditions and high moral standards, and lived her life to uphold those standards. She was a wonderful mom, grandma, aunt, sister and friend to all she met.
She will be dearly missed.
Marie is survived by her children: Richard (Kim) Brewer of Helena; Julie (Woody) Ameline of Choteau; Jack (Roxanne) Brewer of Townsend; Ron (Dee) Brewer of Helena; Linda (Scott) Marsh of Dillon; and Allen (Sandy) Brewer of Winston. She was blessed with 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include: her sister-in-law, Betty Jean Brewer of Spokane, WA; many nieces and nephews; her dear friend Vi Anderson of Billings; and her “Legacy family” in Dillon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, and all her siblings.
Graveside rites were held at the Mayn Cemetery in White Sulphur Springs at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 23. A reception will directly follow at the Yoked Lutheran-Presbyterian Parish in White Sulphur Springs. Gorder-Jensen Funeral Home of Choteau is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be expressed at www.gorderjensenfuneralhome.com. Memorials are suggested to Barrett Hospice in Dillon, The American Diabetes Association or a memorial of your choice.

In last week’s Tribune, this obituary appeared with the wrong photo. The Tribune apologizes for the error and any distress it may have caused.

Della Francis Stanger Thornton

1937–2013

After a week of heartfelt goodbyes from family and friends, Della Francis Stanger Thornton passed away on Aug. 16, 2013. Though she was in and out at the end, she never lost her sense of humor, her concern for loved ones and her caring nature. Her endurance to the end really showed her strength and character, and everyone who knew her is grateful to see her out of pain.
In 1937, in Pocatello, ID, Della Francis Thornton was born to parents Dan and Irene Stanger, and was sister to three rambunctious brothers. Early on she had to learn to be adaptable. Her family moved a lot growing up, resulting in her attending eight different schools in just twelve years. She graduated high school in Hunters, WA, in 1955. After high school, she moved back to Idaho. She worked in Pocatello at H.S. Kress and then as a telephone operator. From there, her next step was love.
In 1956, she married her tall, handsome cowboy in the Idaho Falls Temple. Along with husband Darrell Thornton, she was blessed with three daughters. They then adopted a son, Guy, and went on to have three more sons. All of their children have walked in their mother’s footsteps and have become strong, spiritual, caring individuals. In 1998, Guy was killed in a car accident. Family and friends are happy to know mother and son are reunited now.
Della followed her cowboy husband around the Northwest with their seven children, stopping just long enough to live and love in Washington, Idaho, Canada, Nevada and, finally, Montana. She and her growing family reached their final destination in 1977 in Lima. Darrell and Della would have been married fifty-seven years come August 22.
Della worked in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as a Primary President, a Young Women’s President, and as a counselor in the Relief Society. She taught Primary, Sunday School, Young Women’s and Relief Society many times.
Della was no stranger to service work. She sewed her way into many strangers’ hearts. Donating nearly 600 pieces of children’s clothing to the LDS church and orphanages around the world, she touched many with her contributions and caring, charitable nature.
Della had a gift for making everyone around her feel welcome and loved. People were drawn to her for her sharp wit and sense of humor. She had a generous spirit and was always mindful of people’s needs. She was an amazing cook, seamstress, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Along with her love and boisterous personality, her cinnamon rolls and delicious gravy will be sorely missed, especially come the holidays.
Della is survived by: daughters Valerie Briggs (John), Annette Lee (Roger) and Robin Hales (Don); sons Justin (Janet), Brandon and Dan (Mandi). She was blessed with 20 grandchildren—with one on the way—and two great- grandchildren. All those who knew her and loved her will carry her in their hearts always.
There is a visitation scheduled at the LDS Church in Lima on Wednesday, Aug. 21, from noon to 1:45 p.m., with funeral services following at 2 p.m. A guestbook is available online at www.brundagefuneralhome.com.

08-14-13 Obituaries

Fern Elizabeth Hildreth

1956–2013

Our sweet Fern Elizabeth Hildreth peacefully passed away on August 9, 2013, surrounded by those who loved her.
Her amazing optimism, determination, and love for her family and friends helped her through her valiant fight with cancer. During treatments, Fernie’s sense of humor delighted doctors, nurses, and therapists, as well as other patients who surrounded her.
Fern was born March 29, 1956, to Raymond and Darlene (Goodfellow) Hildreth. In her early years, she lived in Armstead and later was raised in Dillon until she graduated from Beaverhead County High School. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a deep abiding love for the Savior and his unconditional love for her.
Fern had a contagious love for life, laughter and holidays. Her spirit radiated sunshine to all the lives she touched. She loved being outside in just about any capacity—from gardening, horses, biking, swimming and tennis, to sleeping under the stars and any family activity. She had a passion for crocheting afghans and making quilts for all her family members. Throughout high school, she stayed active in many clubs and was a cheerleader for the Beavers. She was Dillon’s Junior Miss for 1973–74.
After high school, Fern married Brand Thornton, and together they had four wonderful children: Nick, Chad, Jesse and Brandee. They moved to Colstrip, where they made their home and raised their family. They were divorced in 1992. Fern was later married to Arnold Garner for 20 years.
Fern worked for the school system and was in charge of the reprographics department. She drove bus for the school and all their different activities. She dearly loved the association and friendships with the children that she met along the way. She was always laughing at what the kids had to say. Fern also worked many years as a part-time driver for Sarpi Transportation. She certified in the field of interior design, where she was able to express her artistic gifts.
Fern’s lifetime of unconditional love and goodness toward everyone was returned to her tenfold during her illness by so many lifetime family and friends. At this time, we want to express our deepest gratitude to those of you who loved her in so many ways. We express a special thanks to the community and school district of Colstrip and Sarpi Transportation.
Fern is survived by: sons Nick, Chad and Jesse (Melissa), and daughter Brandee Burt (Kendall); grandchildren Jarom, Kaylee, Azelynn, Blair and Macey; grandchildren Dylan, Sadee, Noelle, Christian and Juliette; her parents Raymond and Darlene; brothers Clayton, Bryce (Hazel) and Grant (Debbie); sister Amber (Doug); and by many nephews and nieces.
To have known Fern was to have loved her. She will be deeply missed.
On Monday, at the Brundage Funeral Home, a viewing was held to honor our dear Fernie and her funeral was on Tuesday at the LDS Church. All Memorial Contributions can go to Relay for Life, Hospice, or to donor’s choice.
