12-26-12 Obituaries

Martha Louise Gilman Hansen

1922-2012

Martha Louise Gilman Hansen died from pneumonia on Dec. 20, surrounded with family. Martha, or ‘Gabby’ as named by her Grandchildren, was born in Dillon on March 31, 1922 to Louis and Lulu Palin/Gilman. She was the last child, a twin, of four other siblings.

Both of Martha’s parents died by the time she was 15 years of age.  She lived with her Uncle Myron Gilman in Leavenworth, Kansas for a year, and then returned to Dillon, living with her oldest sister Lulu Belle Anderson, while she finished high school.  Martha entered Montana State College and in the next three years received her diploma in nursing.  During those years she met her future husband,
Howard R. Hansen.  Howard served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific and at the end of WWII returned to Dillon, where he and Martha were married in 1945.  They made their home in Medicine Lodge on Hansen Livestock where Howard was ranching with his brother Leonard. Over the next 10 years they had three children, Paul, Anna Belle and Irene.

In 1958, Howard died from cancer, and Martha returned to Dillon with her three small children, bought a home and began her career as a nurse, for years at Barrett Hospital, and then at the end of her career, at Parkview Acres Nursing Home.

Over her life, Martha developed an artistic side that came out in phases of incredible creativity.  She sewed clothing, knitted many a sweater, recovered furniture, tole painted, antiqued trunks, quilted (there are 100’s of her gene quilts around the world), and ceramics.  She had a vast collection of classical music and opera which she loved and for most of her life she was an avid reader.  Martha was a woman of great faith, reading the Bible and praying being a part of her day to day life.  As she aged, she did it with grace, always making good decisions when it was time to downsize. She continued to be busy, wanting to be productive up until the last week of her life. In the last few days of her life, she was surrounded by friends, her children, her five Grandchildren and 10 Great-Grandchildren.
Her family, Paul and Helen Hansen,  Anna Belle and Andy Gaasch,  Irene and Bruce Peters. Grandchildren, Jon Hansen and Kate Juran, Jody Hansen Allison,  Eric and Stephanie Hansen, Jennifer and Sam Buchanan and Ryan and Lindsay Gaasch...Great Grand Children, Savannah and Brock Hansen, Clay and Brice Allison, Sage Hansen, Jace and Carter Buchanan and Murphy, Ryder and Piper Belle Gaasch.

We are so grateful for and give special thanks to Doris Raph, her dear and faithful friend; the wise and loving care provided to ‘Gabby’ over the years by Sandra McIntyre, MD; by the staff at the Renaissance Assisted Living on Center Street; and at the end of her life by the Visiting Nurse Services & Hospice staff, especially Marie Holt, RN and Tennie Beitler, RN.
A Memorial Service celebrating Martha’s life will take place at the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Dillon, on Friday, December 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.  Memorials can be sent to Our Savior Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
We, her family, like to think that Mom/Gabby/Martha is in Heaven’s Library reading to the 20 little kids who lost their life in Connecticut the week before.

Marjory Roberta (Bowers) Bacon

1924 – 2012

God called Mother home on November 23, while being comforted by her son, John and the staff at Parkview Acres.
She was born on July 15, 1924 in Dore, North Dakota to Robert and Lillian Bowers. She was 1 of 9 children.  She married Norris G. Bacon on January 27, 1947.  Norris and Marjory went on to have four children living first in Nohly, MT and then settling in Martin City, MT in 1964.  They were married for 54 years before Norris was taken to Heaven.
Mom was well known for her piano playing and accompanying the love of her life, fiddler Norris Bacon.  She never liked to be on center stage, but was always there to enhance the music of other musicians. She and Norris passed on their love and talent of music onto their children. Holiday meals at the Bacon house were always followed by Mom going to her piano after the dishes were done; she would start to play and the rest of the family would pick up their instruments and join her as if we were being summoned by some unspoken command.
Mom was a member of the VFW auxiliary, Montana Old Time Fiddlers Association, and played music with Norris at the Senior Citizens and various other organizations. She enjoyed quilting, embroidering pillow cases, dish towels, and doilies for her family.  She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.  She never forgot a birthday or anniversary of any family member.  We could always count on getting a card from Mom.
She is preceded in death by her parents Robert & Lillian Bowers; husband, Norris; daughter, Bonnie Marjory; brothers, Thomas and Patrick; sisters, Jenny Dahl and Alice Melby.  She is survived by her children:  John (Carolyn) Bacon of Dillon, MT, Nancy (Ben) Ayres of Martin, South Dakota, and Joan Bacon of Dillon, MT.  Grandchildren:  Hannah Ayres of Boise, ID, Franklin (Libbe) GIlbert of Lake Havasu City, AZ,  Justin Ayres of Martin, South Dakota, Joshua Bacon (fiancé Katie) of Alder, MT, Bonnie (Gabriel) Ortiz of Dillon, MT, and  Amelia (Nate) Bergum of Billings, MT. Great Grand Children:  Jacoby Hayes of Boise, ID, Aiden & Kayla Bergum Billings, MT.  Brother, Robert Bowers, Sisters:  Patricia Hibbard, Marvel Rider, and Kathleen LaCounte, and numerous Nieces and nephews.
If every child could have a Mom like ours the world would be a much better place.  She and Dad are making music for Jesus now.
A memorial was held at Parkview Acres Care & Rehab Center on Saturday, Dec 1, 2012 at 10 am.  A community memorial will be held on December 29, 2012 at Brundage Funeral Home.  A celebration of Mom’s life will be held in Sidney, MT in May, 2013.  Arrangements are being made by Brundage Funeral Home, Dillon, MT.

Dorothy Isabel Hayman Martinell

1909 – 2012

Dorothy Isabel Hayman Martinell, 103 of Lima, Montana passed away at Tobacco Root Mountain Care Center on November 18, 2012. She was born on May 26, 1909 at Cumberland, British Columbia, Canada, to Bill and Isabel Hayman. Seventeen months after her birth, her mother died of appendicitis leaving her maternal grandmother to raise her.
While on vacation to Montana, she met a handsome young rancher, Paul Martinell; they married in 1928. She not only became a life partner to Paul but a partner in the Martinell Brothers Livestock Company.
On December 5, 1930, Paul and Dorothy were blessed with their first son, Everett. Two years later, Gordon, was born on November 6, 1932.  Paul and Dorothy spent the majority of their lives ranching and raising their boys in Big Sheep Creek.  They greatly enjoyed their Sheep Creek neighbors and going to the Danish Brotherhood dances and local ball games.  Dorothy was the last surviving member of the original Martinell Brothers Livestock Partnership.
Paul and Dorothy purchased a house in Lima in the 70's where Paul lived out his remaining days. Paul died in 1978.   Dorothy continued to live in their house in Lima until she fell in 2004 and moved to Dillon and then to Sheridan Tobacco Mountain Care Center where she lived until her death on November 18, 2012.
While living in Lima, Dorothy was active in Eastern Star, was a member of the Lima Community Church and Ladies Aide. Dorothy was known for her kindness and always making a stranger feel welcome. Anyone that came into her house was offered coffee, tea, cookies or a warm meal.  Dorothy was always very appreciative of her neighbors.  She received exceptional care by care givers at the Tobacco Care Center; to whom we are extremely grateful.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, Paul Martinell, son, Everett, daughter-in-law Dorothy Ann, and great grandson, Nick McFall.
She is survived by her son, Gordon (Gladys) Martinell of Dell, MT, grandchildren, Kari (Craig) Johnson of Sidney, MT, Gail Kisling of Idaho Falls, ID, Bill (Kris) Martinell of Dell, MT, Kim Martinell of Dillon, MT, Susan Martinell of Missoula, MT, Marla Martinell of Pocatello, ID; great grandchildren, Cole and Ben Johnson, Nicholia (Drew) Canfield and Hailey Kisling, Shelby, Skylar and Justin Martinell, Parker and Mckenna Jones; and Kasie McFall and great great granddaughter Mya Jacobsen.
Contributions can be made to Lima Fire/Ambulance, Community Church of Lima or charity of your choice.  A guest book is available on-line at www.brundagefuneralhome.com.

Christine Kolar

Christine Kolar was born on a St. Patrick’s Day In Seattle, WA to Sadie LeGate and Wilson Bond Hignight. She recently lost a long battle against breast cancer, but not without a courageous fight.
After high school graduation, she joined the US Army, where she proudly served for seven years. She took basic training at Ft. McClellan, AL. After basic, she served with the Transportation Training School at Ft. Eustis, VA; the Army Medical Command at Camp Zama, Japan; and Letterman General Hospital at the Presidio of San Francisco, CA. She was discharged with the rank of staff sergeant and was awarded the Good Conduct, National Defense Service, and Army Commendation Medals. After being dIscharged, she briefly lived in her hometown of Seattle, and then worked for Selective Service System in Sacramento, CA. She finished her government career with the US Department of Agriculture. Upon completion of her career, she decided to go to college and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Montana Western, wIth a degree in business.
Christine sometimes regretted not making the Army her career, until she met the love of her life, Bill Kolar. Had she re-enllsted again, they never would have crossed paths. They were married on July 23, 1976, and their marriage was later blessed by Fr. Ed Kohler at St. Rose Catholic Church, where they were both members.
Christine was an intensely private person who preferred being in her home with her husband and pets. She loved all animals and detested any form of neglect and abuse done to them. For the better part of their marriage, she and Bill had dogs and cats around, most of which were rescues. She volunteered at the local Humane Society and enjoyed taking pictures of the critters and putting them on the Internet. She was avid about physical fitness and did an intense workout every day. She enjoyed puttering with her computers and electronic gadgets. She was still in email contact with several of her Army friends, and they were a great support to her during her illness, as were her friends, Susie and Vicki, at the shelter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sadie and Wilson, and parents-in-law, Lucille and Clarence Kolar. She is survived by her soul mate and best friend, Bill Kolar, brother Steve (Jane) Hignight, nephew Paul Hignight, uncles Bob (Irene) LeGate, Ken (Helen) LeGate, and Bill’s daughters, Carrie (Gerry) Goody and Paula (Russ) Fisk.
Donations in Christine’s name can be made to the Humane Society of Beaverhead Co., 80 Lagoon Ln. Dillon, MT 59725.
At Christine’s request, no services were held.
