Doris Leona Smith

1920 - 2010

Doris Leona Kavran Smith born in Butte on March 10, 1920, to Michael P. and Stella Kavran, died June 15 at Parkview Acres. She was the middle child of five sisters and one brother.

Doris was a loving and compassionate person. She had a smile that could light up a room. She enjoyed spending time with family and loved ones. Doris was a wonderful grandmother who was active and influential in the lives of all her grandchildren, often teaching them about history, Montana trivia, and life in general.

Doris was married to Tex Smith in 1940 and later divorced.

Doris loved fishing and hiking, and had a keen appreciation for nature’s beauty. Doris was a beautiful and intelligent woman on the inside and outside. She took great pride in her appearance and was a perfectionist in everything she did. Doris was a lifelong fan of country music and had a large collection of books which she loved to read. She loved poetry and wrote many, some of which were published.

When I am Gone

Please, do not sorrow

Or, I will not sleep in peace

For when the “roll” is called up Yonder

Your cares and troubles cease.

–Doris Smith

Survivors include daughter Bonnie Smith Ferris, Dillon, son Rick (Terri) Smith, Dillon; eight grandchildren, Mike (Audra) Ferris, Dillon, Tom (Bobette) Ferris, Twin Bridges; Bob (Jamie) Ferris and Gary Ferris, Dillon; Barbara (Jeff) Ferris Pilon, Gillette, Wyo.; Shauna Smith, Stevensville; Lacey (Dallas) Rasmussen, White Sulpher Springs; Breanne Smith, Dillon; 15 great-grandkids; sisters, Gert Christy, Erma Dugdale, Phyllis Rossland; brother, Mick (Bev) Kavran; and several nieces and nephews.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Laverne Koprivica and Marie Hagl.

I saw Grandma Doris today

I saw her in the Indian Paintbrush on the hillsides

I saw her in the way that the water lapped at the shore of the lake

I saw her in the rocks she would have stopped to pick up and the

Creek she would have taken the time to fish

I will always miss her. I will always love her.

Yet, I am confident she will always be with me.

I will just have to look a little harder to find her.

Jean Marilyn Rolandson

1931 - 2010

Jean Rolandson, 79, passed away due to natural causes on Saturday, June 19, at the Renaissance Assisted Living Center.

Jean Marilyn Peterson was born May 8, 1931 to Milo and Helene Peterson in Roseau, Minn. She attended Bemidji State Teachers College where she received a degree in elementary education. After her studies, she taught kindergarten in Oklee, Minn.

She met and married Ken Rolandson on July 26, 1952. Together they raised four children, Mary, Richard, Nancy and Michael, while living in Oklee.

Work took them across two states, and after living in Townsend and Watford City, N.D., they finally settled in Dillon in 1971.

Though Jean was an avid bridge player, and spent her Saturdays attending Dillon’s Shakespeare Club meetings, her foremost love was for her family and home. Whether it was entertaining for relatives or simply baking a batch of cookies, Jean saw her role as homemaker not as a chore or duty but rather as a passion. She could often be found tending her immaculate garden or enjoying the summer days outside with a novel.

Regardless of the time of day or season of the year, Jean’s home was never anything less than spotless, and any visitors could always count on being greeted by her warmth, generosity and kindness. In addition to these activities, she spent her Sundays at the First Lutheran Church as well as being an active member of the Barrett Hospital Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her son Michael and sister Joan Lokken.

She is survived by her husband, Ken; brother, John Peterson of Roseau, Minn.; daughters, Mary (Shafi) Shafaieh, and Nancy (Darren) Daignault; son, Richard Rolandson; and nine grandchildren.

There will be a visitation at Brundage Funeral Home on Thursday, June 24, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A service will be held on Friday, June 25, at 2 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be sent to the Barrett Hospital Auxiliary or the First Lutheran Church.
