Evelyn Irene Dodd
1916 - 2013
Evelyn Irene Dodd (“Granny”), 96, went to be with her Lord and Savior. She passed on March 22, 2013, in her daughter’s home, surrounded by her loving grandson Robert Eddie, who was her caregiver for two years, her daughter, Jackie, and son-in-law, Dee Eddie, along with several nurses.
She was born on May 10, 1916, to Edward and Mabel Logan McCord in Glenfield, ND. She married Lloyd “Red” Dodd, the love of her life and soul mate, on December 19, 1933. In 1938, the family moved to Dillon, where she raised her three children.
She was a very loving and caring person who spent much of her time with her family. She loved her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and her great-great grandchildren.
She worked at JC Penny, Barrett Memorial Hospital and the Big Dipper Ice Cream Parlor. She was a member of the Red Hat Society. She loved to square dance and spend time with her siblings whenever she could.
She loved to quilt, knit, crochet, sew and can food—all skills she shared with her daughter and granddaughters, and with others. She spent many hours helping others. So many times, she would take meals or quilts she had made to people in need.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and William Dee Eddie of Dillon, and by two sons and daughters-in-law—James and Joan Dodd of Virginia Beach, VA, and Jerry and Evelyn (Nyhart) Dodd of Ringle, WI. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren, sisters Dorothy Bernard and Ruth Loehding, and brother Laverne McCord, as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, sisters Virginia McCord and Bessy Karinen, brothers Clifford, Kenneth, Roy, Dale and Lance McCord, grandson William Eddie and granddaughters Debbie Blaseg, Shirley Eddie and Pamela Dodd.
Come celebrate the wonderful life of Evelyn Dodd with us. Services will be held on May 10, 2013, at the Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m.. Graveside will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, with Pastor David H. Andrew IV conducting the services.
A very special thank you to all those who gave such loving care to her in the final stages of her life. Harry William Grose
1925 - 2013
Harry was born June 11, 1925, in Dillon, and died May 1, 2013, at the ranch at Twin Bridges. He was born the younger son of William Garnet Grose and Nellie Louise (Beall) Grose, and grew up on the family ranch on Cherry Creek at Melrose. On Dec 5, 1961, Harry married Shirley Ann (Bacon) Grose and on the ranch at Twin Bridges they raised four sons—Richard, Bill, Gary and Jim.
Harry went to school through the tenth grade at Melrose. When Harry was 21, his mother died and he stayed on to ranch with his dad on Cherry Creek. While searching for a good rake horse in the Big Hole, he met a young schoolteacher, Shirley Bacon. He soon married her and adopted her infant son, Richard, from her previous marriage, and then the other sons were born into the family. Harry and Shirley lived at the ranch on Cherry Creek until 1970, when they purchased the Matt Telin ranch at Twin Bridges so that it would be easier for the kids to go to school. Harry experienced severe grief when Shirley passed in 1989, and lived alone for the next 22 years. After a particularly difficult hospital stay he moved in with his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Jimilea, and stayed with them for two years until his death.
He was a rancher his whole life and enjoyed all aspects of that life. He lived for riding the range, irrigating, haying and calving. He especially enjoyed seeing baby calves with their mothers and hay growing in the field. Harry provided several relatives with formative life experiences by having them work on the ranch with him. He passed on his work ethic to his children. He loved to tell stories about life growing up and seemed to have an encyclopedic knowledge of many old timers in Beaverhead County. He looked forward to seeing his children and grandchildren, as he dearly loved them, despite his tough disposition and his failing health in his later years. Harry’s joys included calling and talking to many relatives and friends on a daily basis to share the news and weather. He thrived on friendly banter and joking with folks, but he had a softer side, too. He will be remembered as a good friend and dependable alarm clock to many. Of course, he could be difficult if his ways were crossed, but he was generous with folks if he thought they could use the help or money. He will be dearly missed by all, especially those who received calls from him on a regular basis—you know who you are.
Harry was preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley, his parents, his older brother, James Orren, his sister-in-law Theo and niece Carol Nelson.
He is survived by his sons—Richard Grose, of Palestine, TX; Bill (Jimilea) Grose, of Twin Bridges; Gary (Stephanie Gerringa) Grose, of Hailey, ID; and Jim Grose of Bozeman—and his grandchildren—Randon Van Meter; Krystyl Miller; William S. (aka Dude) Grose; Suzan Grose; Carsyn Gerringa; and Carter Gerringa—and great-grandson Shaydon Van Meter. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Ted (Judy) Bacon and David Bacon, and sister-in-law Gail (John) Dooling, and by nephews, Ken (Bette) Grose, Dale (Cathy) Grose, J. Nelson, Dennis (Mykal) Kirkpatrick and Jesse Kirkpatrick, and by nieces, Dorothy (Don) Alderman and Joetta (Gordon) Wetzsteon. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
Thanks to the staff at Barrett Hospital and Healthcare for caring for him through his frequent hospital stays during the last several years and to Bill, Jimilea, Dude and Suzie Grose who kept dad at their house at the ranch during his last two years.
Harry’s memorial will be at 2 p.m. on May 8 at the Church of the Valley in Twin Bridges, with a reception and then committal to follow at Point of Rocks Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Barrett Hospital and Healthcare or a charity of your choice.
Rosemary Genevieve Bourn Rieber
1919 - 2013
Rosemary Genevieve Bourn Rieber passed away from complications of a massive stroke on May 4, 2013, at the Renaissance Senior Center in Dillon.
Rosemary was born in Ekalaka on November 3, 1919, to William and Nettie (Stepanek) Bourn. When she was a year old, her parents returned to Ainsworth, Nebraska, where she grew up. She was the eighth of nine children.
She came to Reichle (Glen), Montana, to visit her sister and brother-in-law and met her future husband, John C. Rieber. They were married on June 18, 1942, in Lima.
Rosemary became a “Mother” on Mother’s Day, May 14, 1944, giving birth to her twin daughters, Rosemary and Regina. She would also have another daughter, Edith, and her only son, John.
She and her husband ranched on Rock Creek for 70 years. Her son, John, remains on the family ranch along with his son, Chris. This is the fourth generation on the ranch.
Rosemary’s life revolved around her family. She enjoyed raising her four children, working on the ranch, cooking, gardening, canning, embroidering and crocheting. She was the ultimate homemaker.
Rosemary was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Melrose.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Rosemary (Richard) Wenger of Billings, Regina (John) Maki of Dillon, Edith (Frank) Stanchfield of Wise River and son John W. (Michele) Rieber of Glen. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials can be made to the Barrett Hospital and Hospice or the charity of your choice.
A visitation is scheduled for Thursday, May 9, from 5 to 7 p.m., with a vigil service starting at 7 p.m. at Brundage Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 10 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. A guestbook is available online at www.brundagefuneralhome.com.
