Arthur Joseph Redfern
1920 - 2011
We lost our Great Uncle Arthur Joseph “Joe” Redfern in the early hours of Thursday, July 7. Uncle Joe passed peacefully in the Powell County Memorial Hospital in Deer Lodge. He had most recently been a resident at the Deer Lodge Care & Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Laurin, the Ruby Valley, on June 7, 1920, Uncle Joe was the son of Emily “Millie” (Mantha) and Arthur J. Redfern.
Uncle Joe was a quiet man and had never married. However, his love shone for the children and grandchildren of his siblings. Quite often the younger children could be found on Uncle Joe’s lap telling their stories or vice versa.
Uncle Joe’s trade was that of a very skilled mechanic.
Uncle Joe’s former homes included Dillon, Butte, East Missoula, and Bonner. Uncle Joe considered Deer Lodge “home” for about the past 20 years.
Uncle Joe was the last in his generation of a Montana pioneer family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Millie and Arthur; his siblings, Marion Ryan, Howard, Robert, Neva Sargeson, Mildred Moran, Francis and baby sister Dorothy Redfern.
Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews and their children; Uncle Joe’s niece and nephew, Nora and Dave Meier of Deer Lodge, took especially good care of Uncle Joe the last few years; Fran Ryan Gallagher, formerly of Dillon, and her children survive Uncle Joe.
We miss you already Uncle Joe. May you be greeted by so many family members in heaven. We love you.
A private memorial and interment will be held in Laurin at a later date.
