Nettie “Irene” Morris

1928 - 2012

On Feb. 6, Nettie “Irene” Morris left this world to fly beyond with Jesus and her favorite pilot, Andy, and daughters, Beverly and Carol.

Irene was born on March 26, 1928, to Amos and Rosa (Roberts) Rucker, in Lynn, Ind.

When her older brother called and told the family about beautiful Montana, they moved up here to Livingston.

In 1946 she met and married James Andre “Andy” Morris. They settled in Twin Bridges, and spent the next 20 years working there and raising four children.

In 1968, Andy realized his dream of being a full time pilot, and he and Irene ran the Dillon Flying Service until his death in 1988.

Irene worked after that for the Big Sky Truck Stop and Beaverhead IGA, before retiring.

Mom loved her big yard and garden. She was an avid bowler with her hip hop approach, and was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ.

She will be missed by her son, Lyle (Janet) Morris, Idaho; daughter, Evelyn (Jon) Edmisten, Whitehall, a grandson, Ray Edmisten; Jacob and Nina Edmisten, Germany; Brian Morris, Michael Edmisten, Zane and Renae Morris; granddaughters, Amanda and Jolene Edmisten; great-grandchildren, Jon and Mia Edmisten, Gabrill, Alisa and Cameron Morris; sisters, Leaola Muir and Jane Naylor.

Irene requested that there be no services.

Any memorial contributions may be made to Barrett Home Health and Hospice.

John Edward Snyder

1934 - 2012

John Edward Snyder passed away of natural causes on Feb. 9, at Marcus Daly Hospice in Hamilton in his 78th year. He thought he was headed for that great steelhead river in the sky, to scout it out for his pals.

John never took life too seriously, although no one could have loved life or lived life any fuller or more appreciatively. He allowed that he considered himself one of the luckiest people who ever lived in every way, and had 77 years of near-perfect health, lived to the hilt.

John served as principal at Stevensville Public Schools, K through eight, and later K through six, for most of his 30 years at the school. He thought he had the best job in the world, and he loved his staff. They responded in kind, and kids benefited greatly.

To say that John loved hunting and fishing would be like saying birds like to fly. Between his younger years, his four military years, and the years of living in Alaska (University of Alaska) as a resident, John managed to hunt and / or fish New York State, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, Wisconsin and Canada, including Newfoundland, Labrador, and British Columbia.

He was a confirmed bachelor at the age of 24, with plans to continue as stated indefinitely. Then he met Alberta, and things changed quickly, for the better. He always thought he married up, and 52-plus years later he said it was the single best decision he ever made.

John and Alberta, a second grade teacher in Missoula and Stevensville, raised two delightful daughters, and had a good time doing it.

All in all, John said that he was so far ahead in the game of life that he has been playing with house money for many years, as Charlie Russell put it; and he is a winner in a big time way.

John is survived by his wife, Alberta; daughter, Shelly Unruh, Dillon, and Kecia Bruce, and her husband Doug Caley, North Bend, Wash.; granddaughter, Ellie Bruce; sister, Jean Blatchley, Pineland, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Beatrice Snyder, of Olean, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Marcus Daly Hospice of Hamilton, or the Bitterroot Humane Society.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.

Marquita Very

1924 - 2012

Mom's guardian angel decided to take Marquita Very home after 87 great years of living in Montana. She left us on Tuesday, Jan. 31, after a short battle with cancer.

Mom was born in Missoula on the Fourth of July, 1924, to Lutie Belle and Irving Roberts. She spent her early years at Bonita and Clinton.

Mom was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Kenneth and Nick Roberts.

She is survived by her younger brother, Glen Roberts, Missoula; sister, Daisy Kelly, Washington; along with her daughters, Diane, Sheree and Vivyan; son, Paul; and grandchildren, Brad, Valerie, Danielle, Jeremy, Chris and Alexandra.

A memorial service is planned for Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m., at Grace United Methodist.

Brundage Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Robert (Bob) Duane Pierson

Robert (Bob) Duane Pierson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and huggable curmudgeon, was laid to rest Feb. 6, in Twin Bridges near the mountains and evergreen trees that he loved.

He was a patriot who served this nation in the U.S. Air Force during the early days of the Cold War; and as deputy sheriff of Storey County, Nev. He stood in the gap where others would not.

Dad was jack-of-all-trades and a master of many, a mechanic, logger, a geo-thermo driller, and a farrier.

With his adventures in between, he leaves us an exemplary legacy of honor, integrity and service, dedicated to God, family and country.

A wife, two brothers, three sisters, six children, 19 nieces and nephews, 14 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren will miss him until we meet again.

Lola Marie Gillespie

1919 - 2012

Lola Marie Gillespie, of Dillon, passed away on Feb. 5, at Barrett Hospital.

She was born to Albert and Erma Anderson in Dilworth, Minn., on Oct., 24, 1919.

Lola’s childhood was spent in the railroad town of Dilworth, and her mother taught her the art of making Norwegian treats.

After graduating from high school, Lola decided to go to business school where she met James C. Gillespie, and the two were married on Feb. 15, 1941, in the Anderson’s home.

Lola and Jim lived in many places in Montana and Alaska including Chinook, Great Falls, Big Sandy, Kalispell, Essex, Lincoln, North Pole, Bornite, Juneau, and ended up in Dillon.

They raised four children, Joyce, Jim, Jack and Jean. Lola was very involved in her children’s lives, and even ended up as a scout leader.

All of her projects are considered originals. She would sew anything from gowns to upholstery, embroider, crochet, cook, bake, spin, knit, and create miniatures, each unique and special.

She was active in the First Presbyterian Church, Barrett Hospital Volunteers, Barrett Hospital Auxiliary, and the Girl Scouts.

Lola was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim; brothers, Ernest and Billy; son, Jim, Jr.; and daughter, Joyce Jauhola.

She is survived by brothers, Douglas (Delphine) and Duane (Janice); a sister, Eunice Larson; a son, Jack (Cherry); a daughter, Jean (Dennis) DeVivo; a daughter-in-law, Ilse Gillespie; grandchildren, Bret (Lori) Ojala, Dean (Charlotte) Ojala, Sr., Jack Gillespie, Jr., Dana (Jay) Schatz, Bryan (Dea) Gillespie, Nicki (Mark) Youngquist, and David Oscar Gillespie; as well as numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation is scheduled between 1 and 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Brundage Chapel, with funeral services following at 2 p.m. at Brundage.

Harold Fielding Tollett

1912 - 2012

Harold Fielding Tollett passed away peacefully at his home in Millville, Calif., on Feb. 1.

Harold was born in San Luis Obispo on April 9, 1912.

He married his sweetheart, Evelyn, in Carson City, Nev., on Aug. 3, 1933. They were married for almost 75 years when Evelyn passed.

Harold was accomplished at practically anything. A Jack-of-all-trades would be an understatement.

He ranched, farmed, had a number of dairies, assisted veterinarians, worked in ship yards, played bass fiddle with world class band players, and was an exceptional gardener. Harold was a special individual that could look at something and eventually figure out either how to build it or fix it.

Throughout his life he built a number of homes, including one that was given the award of Home of the Year, in Sunset magazine.

Harold was a talented fly-fisherman, and fished in six different states, British Columbia, Belize and New Zealand, to practice his favorite sport.

He also loved to hunt, and at the young age of 86 was still chasing goats high in the Spanish Peaks.

But more than anything, he truly loved his family and friends. Those lucky enough to be a part of his life could always depend on Harold. He just couldn’t be helpful and supportive enough.

Harold and Evelyn lived in Oregon, Washington, California and Montana, spending most of their later years in Cedarville, Calif., Dillon, and Jeffers.

Harold is survived by daughters, Judy (Bob) Cockrell, Eagleville, Calif., Wendy (John) Benner, Cedarville, Calif.; son, Tim (Teresa) of Dillon; daughter, Milissa (Scott) Melamed, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Gladys Tollett, Waldport, Ore.; daughter-in-law, Lorale Tollett, Millville, Calif.; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; sons, David and John; and daughters, Carol and Melanie.

Gary E. Brown

1935 - 2012

Gary E. Brown left us on the day of Friday, Jan. 27, at 4:31 p.m., at Barrett Memorial Hospital in Dillon following an extended illness.

He was born in Lima on April 21, l935, the son of Carl and

Lillie Brown.

He grew up in Lima and attended Lima High School. He

served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 1, 1957, through Jan. 30, 1959.

People will remember him at Howard Motors, and soon after Big Sky Motors where he was the shop foreman. Following that he worked at Paul’s Chevrolet until his retirement.

He is survived by Loretta Olson, Bruce Olson, LaDawn Maloney, Tina Flansburg, six grandchildren, one great grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Lillie Brown; brothers, Pat Brown and Jack Brown; and sister, Carleen McCarthy.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Gary Brown’s life at the Yesterday Café in Dell, Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 3 p.m.

According to Gary’s wishes cremation has taken place, and a private graveside service is planned at the Lima Cemetery.

Dorothy Ruth Mai Beddor

1927 - 2012

Dorothy Ruth Mai Beddor passed away peacefully after spending a joyous Sunday celebrating her 65th wedding anniversary to her best friend Harold Lloyd Beddor Jan. 23. She slipped from consciousness late Sunday afternoon.

Dorothy Ruth lived a full and happy life. Shortly after the end of World War II while working at the Burley, Idaho, airport, she met a young handsome sailor who wanted to take flying lessons.

With only a motorcycle and little more than the clothes on his back, he somehow convinced her to take a chance on him. He became her soul mate. His love of flying blossomed into a career with the FAA, and ultimately he retired as Chief of Flight Service at the Butte Montana Airport.

They took time to enjoy each other and grow before starting a family.

Dorothy Ruth always worked and was proud of her various careers. Her parents emigrated from Germany, and instilled in her the fulfillment that comes from working hard. She told great stories of her various careers.

Her career highlights include working as a railroad telegrapher, passing up orders to trains with a specially made stick as they sped through her small outpost in Kimama, Idaho. It was a dangerous career, and women were only hired for this job, because most of the men were away at war.

During the war she also worked as chief clerk of ordinance at the German prisoner of war camp in southern Idaho. She reported directly to the major in charge of the camp.

Just prior to starting a family, she was a telephone operator, and at various times went back to work for the phone company.

At one time both her and her oldest daughter Marlene worked together at the phone company in Grand Junction, Colo.

While raising her children she owned a flower shop in Dillon that gained much acclaim. She provided flowers for many prestigious events in the region.

Later she worked for Montana Power in Butte.

She watched over her flock with devotion. Her husband, Harold, her daughters Marlene Beddor Atiyeh, Barbara Beddor and Sally Beddor Nowak, and their spouses Cory Atiyeh, Toby Steward, and Scott Nowak.

It was often joked that she loved her boys more than her girls as she took sides with her son’s-in-law during any good natured disagreement. But her biggest joy of all was her three grand children, Sam Atiyeh, Danika and Nikolas Nowak.

Her flock also included a great number of animals, sheep, dogs, cats, chickens, horses, she loved all animals. Sick and wounded animals would just showed up at her door, and she would nurse them back to health. She was a steadfast caregiver. Recently she would not pass up a chance to dog sit Lucy or Wally.

Gentle and kind, yet a fierce competitor. Family board games of UNO or Sequence would traditionally find her on the winning team. She also loved to continue learning, and she embraced technology. She loved her iPAD, especially because it allowed her to beat her daughters in Words with Friends.

She loved the outdoors. Camping with her young family at Minors Lake, or skiing during the winter. She was an excellent skier, and a member of the Maverick Mountain Ski Patrol. She patrolled each Wednesday, Ladies Day. Her partners on the ski patrol were young Catholic priests, and they made quite a team.

She loved adventure and traveling. After Harold retired from the FAA they traveled to Costa Rica, where she loved learning a new culture.

From there they hit the open road in their small motor home, and spent several years touring the country before they settled down in Meridian, Idaho, a suburb of Boise.

Recently to be closer to her youngest grandchildren, she and Harold moved to Hayden, Idaho.

In the last several years she encountered a heart ailment, and yet she was determined to continue at the same pace, and till the end it was joked that no one in the family could keep up with her when she was shopping. Costco was her favorite hangout. She never met a stranger, and no one could resist engaging in conversation with her.

In addition to her husband, daughters and their families, she is survived by her older brother, Norman Mai, his wife Ella, and their family; her younger brother, Walter Mai; and brother-in-law Paul Crawford and his family.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Lola Crawford.

A celebration of her life was held Jan. 28, at the Hayden Chapel of the Yates Funeral Home in Hayden, Idaho.

John Crandall Hovren

1933 - 2011

John Crandall Hovren passed away on Dec. 17, in Missoula. He was born in Dillon Jan. 7, 1933, the only child of Cornelius and Edith Crandall Hovren.

He attended Dillon schools and graduated from Beaverhead County High School in 1950. He attended Montana State University in Bozeman, and the University of Montana in Missoula.

Mr. Hovren served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He later joined his father in business at the Standard Lumber and Coal Company in Dillon.

In 1959 he married Rosella McQuillan in Pocatello, Idaho. They later divorced.

In 1998 he married Carolyn Mae Ring. She survives along with his children Marjorie (Steve) Roberts, Moodus, Ct., and Andrew (Tammy) Hovren, Spokane, Wash.; granchildren Lonnie, Tacoma, Wash., and Alexia and Madison Hovren, Spokane, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Hovren was active in the American Legion Post in Dillon for many years.

Burial will be held at a later date at the Veteran's cemetery in Fort Harrison.

C.W. “Red” Eudaily

1922 - 2012

Former long-term Dillon resident C.W. "Red" Eudaily died Jan. 21 at his daughter's residence in Sacramento, Calif. He was 88.

Red was reared in Illinois, and called San Jose, Calif., his home.

He was an apprentice-trained cheese maker, a retired USAF SMSgt, a grand story teller of the family, and of the world he had seen; a truly centered man.

Red transferred from his wet, cold and muddy army training camp because he had heard rumors that a more certain roof and better food was to be found in the USAF.

During the war he flew in the "heavies", seeing combat in North Africa and then in southern Europe, where he was decorated for saving his combat aircraft and crew.

Red flew an excess of missions because some 60 men of his training cadre resolved not to return from the war zone until all had done the required number of missions. Only four made it back stateside.

Subsequent duty took Red to the Korean War, the Philippines, and Japan, finally settling him at Edwards AFB as part of a team which tested aircraft, and the interface problems with man.

As any able NCO, Red cultivated relationships developed in the crucible of war and in subsequent duty rotations.

His career was cut short by choosing to become a civilian so he could look after his then teen-age, and now surviving daughter, Jeanie. She opened her home to Red the past three years, and attended him in his final days.

Interment is planned in San Jose, Calif.

Martha Robinson

1932-2012

Martha Anna Robinson, 78, of Dillon, Montana passed away at her home on Jan. 5, 2012 of natural causes.

She was born on June 17, 1932 in Clinton, Mo., to Lester and Maude (Clark) Cassity. She grew up in Missouri and moved to Spokane, Wash., with her family where she met the love of her life, Gene H. Robinson. They were married and raised three boys; Michael, Jerry, and Patrick.

Martha enjoyed working on the family farm/ranch that they established in Colville, Wash. She also did volunteer work for the Fire Department, she was a dispatcher and helped in the Sheriff’s Office. Her husband, Gene, passed away in 2002 and Martha and Patrick moved to Florida for a short time then moved to Dillon.

She enjoyed Dillon more than any place she had been as she loved nature and watching all kinds of wildlife. She also was a people watcher and was curious about everything and she felt the warm welcome of the people in Dillon. She enjoyed the social networking through Prairie Bible Church and just enjoyed visiting with anyone she met.

Some of her favorite places were the Dairy Queen, Grandma’s Kitchen or watching the ducks near the children’s pond. Martha was proud of her Irish heritage and loved to speak in an Irish Brogue and when she listened to her Irish music she would say “that is home.”‘

Martha is survived by her son; Patrick of Dillon and Michael of Colville, Wash. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gene, and son, Jerry. A visitation was held Monday and funeral services were held Tuesday morning at Brundage Funeral Home.

Dan Fritts

1965-2012

Dan Fritts, age 46, passed away near Dillon Jan. 12, 2012.

Dan was born May 24, 1965 at Decatur, Ill., to Stephen and Margaret (Davis) Fritts. He was raised and attended school in Lovington, Ill. He then attended automotive mechanic school at Lincoln Tech in Indianapolis. He worked as an automotive mechanic in Illinois and then in 1989 became an electrician. He and his family moved to Whitehall in 1997 later moving to Twin Bridges and recently to Sheridan where he continued working as an electrician.

He married Christina Doss April 11, 1987 in Sullivan, Ill.

Dan enjoyed camping, hunting and the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his son Cale Fritts, and his grandparents Emery and May Davis, and Ellen Olden.

Survivors include his wife Christina Fritts, children Malisha and Kaitlynn, his parents Stephen and Margaret Fritts all of Sheridan, grandfather Ira Fritts, brother Darren Fritts, mother-in-law Lynda Allen, father-in-law Albert Allen, brother-in-law Eric Allen, sister-in-law Carla McGheen, nieces and nephews Tad, Saxon, Kiersten, Emily, and Joshua Fritts, Trevor and Ryan McGheen.

Memorials may be made to the Dan Fritts Fund at the Ruby Valley National Bank at Sheridan or Twin Bridges.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m. at the Mountainview Baptist Church at Twin Bridges with the Rev. David Rogers and Chaplain Tom Luksha officiating. Interment will follow at the Twin Bridges Cemetery.

Sandra Sue Brown

1935 - 2011

Sandra Sue Brown, born

July 28, 1935, passed away Dec. 25.

She graduated in 1956 from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in education and a minor in French and went on to teach school in Venezuela for Phillips Oil company.  

Sandra received a master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in psychology, and was  fluent in three languages, Russian, French and Spanish.

She married Charles Dean Fisher in 1960, and had Dean in May of 1961. She was married to Charles Dean Fisher until his death in late 1960. Later she married Conger Eugene Brown in September 1966, and became stepmother to Scott, Stace and Vernon Brown.  

She was influential in beginning multiple of special education programs for the Stephens County School District before moving to Irving, Texas in 1986, and working as an elementary school counselor for the Irving ISD.  

Sandra wrote a children’s book called “sunkissed kitty learns to say no”, dealing with kids saying no to drugs.  

Upon her retirement in 1998, she and Conger returned to Oklahoma and the home that her parents, Everett and Velma Kincaid, built in 1956 on Lake Texoma at Soldier Creek, where she loved to fish and spent many an hour in her boathouse chasing the lake record.  

She was grandmother to Taylor and Adam Brown of Fort Worth, Texas, Bert and Steven Brown of Dillon, Ryan, Mike and Lisa Brown of Denver, Colo., and Tulsa, Okla., and Jake Brown of Joplin, Mo.  

She enjoyed western history, and wrote a novel, “Stardust in the wind”, after doing extensive research in the Southern Oklahoma and Texas regions.

She became interested in art and oil painting during the last five years, and was a member of the Madill Art Club.  She also enjoyed animals, and befriended many a stray cat in the Soldier Creek area, and raised a coyote pup named CiCi who also became a character in a children’s book.  

In the fall her favorite sport was football, and she could be found rooting the Sooners on every year, as well as the Dallas Cowboys. And when her grandsons played she did her best to not miss a single game.

Graveside services were held at the Woodberry-Forest Cemetery in Madill, Okla., Dec. 29. Condolences can be left at www.wattsfuneralhome.com.

John L. Schuler

1919 - 2011

John L. Schuler, 92, a longtime resident of Dillon, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 22, at Parkview Acres Rest Home in Dillon.

He was born Sept. 24, 1919, in Dillon, a son of Harry Schuler and Anna (Reece) Schuler.

John was a farmer/rancher in his younger years, managed the Town Pump in Dillon for many years (one of the first in Montana), worked for the city, and was a custodian at Beaverhead County High School . John was an avid golfer and walker, who loved to fish and garden.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his two sisters, Mildred Hall and Harriet Furaus; his two brothers, Harry, Jr. (Bud) Schuler and Lee Schuler.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lois (Rider) Schuler. They were married on June 12, 1943.

He is also survived by two daughters, Marianna (Gary) Knowlton, Port Ludlow, Wash., and Linda (Lawrence) Daggett, Great Falls; three sons, John C. (Katherine) Schuler, Dillon, Robert Schuler, Billings, and James (Lorene) Schuler, Dillon. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

John was loved and respected by his family and many friends.

Private graveside services will be held at the Mountain View Cemetery in Dillon.

Geraldine Theresa St. Onge

1931 - 2011

Geraldine Theresa St. Onge, M.D., died on Dec. 28, in Dillon. She was born Dec. 10, 1931.

She was raised on ranches near Whitehall and Butte. She graduated from Butte High School as a member of the National Honor Society.

She received a bachelor’s degree in bacteriology with honors from the University of Montana, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, Tanan of Spur, Mortar Board and Alpha Lambda Delta honor society.

On a Kellogg foundation scholarship she participated and received a master’s of science degree in medical technology in the Henry Ford Hospital – Wayne State University program in Detroit, Mich.

She then initiated and headed the Department of Microchemistry at Henry Ford Hospital until her matriculation to medical school at Wayne State University College of Medicine, where she received the M.D. degree with distinction in 1965.

After serving a rotating internship at Detroit General Receiving Hospital, and named Intern of the Year, she served as a Peace Corps volunteer physician in N’Guigmi, Nigeria, West Africa, where she participated in the World Health Organization’s campaign to eradicate smallpox.

Following that service, she completed fellowships in internal medicine, received an outstanding achievement award in internal medicine and gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic.

Upon completion of her training in 1972, she joined the faculty of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, as an attending physician in gastroenterology and internal medicine, at the notorious Fort Apache, Lincoln Hospital, in South Bronx, N.Y.

She also served as Deputy Director of Medicine, president of the medical staff, and as a member of the Council of Medical Board Presidents of the Health and Hospitals Corporation, of New York City. During this service she was given the distinguished service award for service to patients.

In 1978 she was appointed head of gastroenterology at the North Central Bronx-Montefiore Municipal Hospital affiliate of Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

While administering the department, practicing and teaching gastroenterology and internal medicine, she maintained an internal medicine practice in the Ambulatory Care department.

Her efforts were recognized with the Director’s Award for Extraordinary and Exemplary Service in Direct Patient Care.

Late in her career, she served as an attending physician in the Emergency Medicine department.

After some 30 years of practice, she retired in 1997 to continue her interest in exotic travel, theater, ballet and art, as well as New York City and national politics.

She is survived by her sisters, Eileene (Edwin) Armstrong, Dillon, Ularie Marie St. Onge, Butte, Mary Frances Sylvester, Billings; nieces and nephews, Jacqueline (Rod) Christiaens and sons, Valier, Jan Trafelet and son, Albuquerque, N.M., Scott (Sarah) Armstrong and children, Albuquerque, N.M., Marc (Nan) Sylvester and daughters, Gilbert, Ariz., Joe (Karen) Sylvester and children, Greybull, Wyo., Michelle Hadfield and children; cousins, Ruth Souza and children, Ojai, Calif., Wilma (Bim) Burkes, Ojai, Calif., Margaret Gulley and children, Portland, Ore., Ted (Lucy) St. Onge, Helena, and Helen Marie O’Neil and children, Butte.

Per Geraldine’s request there will be no services held.

Albert Madsen

1948 - 2011

Albert Madsen passed away on Dec. 27, at the VA hospital in Salt Lake City, following a long battle with leukemia.

Albert knew nearly everyone in Dillon, and was known as a person who liked to visit. He had lived in the Bicentennial Apartments for the last six years. When he wasn’t about town visiting, he spent much of his free time adding to his many collections.

Albert was born in Dillon on July 8, 1948, and grew up and attended schools there.

Following high school he went into the Army and spent two years there with most of the time in Vietnam where he was a medic. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal.

Following Vietnam, he worked in Dillon at various places and spent most of his free time riding his beloved motorcycle. Although he never owned a Harley, he dreamed of it and had many miniature replicas of one.

He is survived by his sister Linda (Dick) Reichle, Dillon; niece, Jana Reichle, Lolo; nephews, Dale (Katie) McLaughlin and Ed McLaughlin of Spokane Valley, Wash., Rod McLaughlin, Portland, Ore.; great nephews, Chris McLaughlin, Bend, Ore., Carter Reichle, Lolo, Sage Reichle Schoonen, Dillon; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marius Madsen and Vera Bourassa Madsen; brother, Harold Hill; sister, Irene (Hill) McLaughlin; and nephew, Ryan Reichle.

Albert was a kind person, always interested in others, and with a wealth of knowledge about Dillon and its inhabitants. He loved history and the History channel but rarely missed Wheel of Fortune. He had a great respect for the military and his country.

He will be missed by many who saw him often and enjoyed his stories.

All are welcome to celebrate Albert’s life and memory. Cremation has taken place in Salt Lake City, and services will be held in Dillon at 10 a.m. on Jan. 12 at the Brundage Funeral Home, with a military graveside service at the cemetery followed by a reception.

Joy C. Bateman Boka

1938 - 2011

Joy C. Bateman Boka died Dec. 5 in Dillon.

She was born in Butte Jan. 19, 1938, the daughter of James and Ruby Bateman.

She was raised and attended schools in Dillon, and married William Lewis (Bill) Boka on Feb. 13, 1955.

Bill was the one and only love of her life, and they spent many wonderful years together until his passing in 1993.

They had many friends and enjoyed all types of activities including bowling, square dancing and traveling, but mostly they enjoyed just being together.

Joy attended Western Montana College for a period before going to work for the U.S. Forest Service in 1966. She worked there until 1978, and then finished her career working for the BLM, retiring from there in 1988.

She enjoyed all types of board, card and computer games, where her competitive spirit really came out, but she most loved just reading a good murder mystery novel.

At one time she liked to brag that her name was on the card of every murder mystery novel in the Dillon Public Library.

Besides her parents and half brother, James Miles Bateman, Joy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill, in 1993, and thankfully, they are finally together again.

She is survived by a very special daughter, Penny Jo (Haynie) Boka; and four sons, Mark (Dee), Matt (Susie) and Mike, all of Dillon, and Will Boka, Kalispell; one granddaughter, Danette’ (Boka) Snyder, Jackson; and seven grandsons, Josh, Chase, Brandon and Lane Boka, Dillon, Brant (Laurie) Paige, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Chris and Tony Boka, Kalispell.

A memorial service was held Dec. 13 at Brundage Funeral Home in Dillon.

Budd William Seyler

1924 - 2011

Budd William Seyler, 87, passed away at St. Patrick’s Hospital, on Dec. 4.

Born on June 11, 1924, to William and Beatrice (Larson) Seyler, Budd was a pioneer resident of the Ruby Valley.

Budd made his home on his ranch near Twin Bridges until 2001 when he moved to his Dillon ranch.

Budd married Gloria McLaughlin in Butte on July 17, 1943. From that union they had four children, Glenn, Gerald, Joan and Susan.

Budd was a past master of Masonic Lodge #27, a member of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Royal Neighbors of America. He also belonged to the Moose Camp Stock Association, and the Garden Creek Stock Association.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Gloria; sons, Glenn and Gerald; daughters, Joan (Norm) Wicks, and Susan (Scott) Jones; his grandchildren, Stacy Wicks, Kim (Josh) Ehrlich, Terri (Zack) Medina, Coley Jones and Brooke Jones; one great-grandchild, Colin; and a sister, Hope Mommer.

A visitation was held Dec. 8 at Brundage Chapel, with a graveside service on Dec. 9 at Twin Bridges Cemetery.

Lorena Mae Eldridge Ballard

1945 - 2011

Lorena Mae Eldridge Ballard passed away peacefully in her home on Nov. 25, with her family by her side.

She was born on Oct. 28, 1945, to Hank and Margaret Eldridge in Billings. She grew up in Billings and the Muscle Shell area.

In 1974 she moved to Dillon, where she raised her kids and worked various jobs.

She met many people and made a lot of friends during her time in Dillon. She enjoyed taking long drives, and spending time with her family and friends drinking coffee and sharing old stories. She had a special relationship with her longtime companion of 20 years, Gabriel Riojas, and her five kids, eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her companion, Gabriel Riojas; sons, Myron Eldridge, Jeff Jacobs and Harley Long; a daughter, Julie Velasco. She is also survived by sisters, Lavern Riojas, Rita Burwell; and a brother, Harvey Eldridge.

There are also many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; sisters, Lorraine and Claudia; a son, Danny Jacobs; and great-granddaughter, Emma Eldridge.

Services are pending until further notice.

She was a very special woman who was loved by many and will be missed by all the people she touched throughout her life.

William Morris Stathem

1921 - 2011

William Morris Stathem(Bill) went peacefully to sleep Friday, Nov. 25.

Bill was born on the family farm, June 27, 1921, near Fresno, Calif.

In high school he was in FFA, where he came in contact and became lifelong friends with Slim Pickins.

In July 1942 Bill met Ethel Leap, whom he married in December 1943. Together they had five children, Micki, Dennis, Sherry, Verlen and Faron.

Bill worked for Dan Ibey, building homes in Ibeyville. Later he worked for Lee Sturm. Then he started building and remodeling on his own.

Bill was preceded in death by his four brothers, Lester, Vereau, Glen and Chuck; a sister, Zedda Brown; three children, Dennis, Sherry and Verlen.

Bill is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ethel; his daughter, Micki; his son, Faron; and his sister, Fay Doty; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Stansberry, Melissa Escobar, Curtis Bunse, Kara Curries, Dennis and Michael Stathem; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Dec. 3 at Brundage Funeral Home.

Jerold S. Norby

1933 - 2011

Jerold S. Norby, formerly of Dillon, passed away peacefully Nov. 9, in Columbia Falls.

Jerry was born April 3,1933, in Hettinger, N.D., to Sven and Serina (Skogen) Norby. He was the twelfth of 13 children.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean was as a dragline operator until he was honorably discharged in 1954.

After serving in the Air Force, he married Rose Degenstein in 1954. They welcomed three children, Cindy, Jerry and Tim, and one step-child, Alan. It ended in divorce.

Jerry then married Marilyn Jensen in California in 1970. They had one child together, Sandy, and one step-child, Debbie.

Jerry was an over-the-road truck driver, and thru out his travels he fell in love with Montana, and decided to move his family to Dillon in 1970.

Jerry lived in Dillon until 1993, and then resided in Columbia Falls until his death.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his six brothers, and three sisters.

He is survived by his daughters, Sandy (Todd) Okken and Cindy (Bobby) Slifert; step-daughter, Debbie Bellis; his sons, Jerry and Tim; and step-son, Alan; two brothers, Carl and Kenny; six grandchildren, Vance, Trevor, Nicole, Nick, Nyles and Brian.

Cremation took place in Kalispell. A private family service will take place in Hettinger, N.D., in the spring of 2012.

Lorelyn Marshall Walker

1940- 2011

Lorelyn Marshall Walker was born Nov. 24, 1940, to Loren and Leolyn (Howard) Marshall.

She passed away Dec. 1 at the Madison Valley Hospital in Ennis after a brief illness.

Lorelyn attended Bozeman schools graduating from Bozeman Senior High School in 1959.

She married Jim Walker in 1958 and moved with him to Arlington, Va., where they made their first home.

In 1960 they returned to Bozeman where they lived until 1977 when they moved to Ennis.

Lorelyn’s working career included positions at MSU and State Farm Insurance in Bozeman; First Madison Valley Bank and Madison Valley Hospital in Ennis.

After her retirement in 1998, she and Jim spent much of their time camping, fishing and spending time attending their grandchildren’s activities across Montana, Idaho and Oregon.

The past 10 winters were spent at their home in Yuma, Ariz., where she and Jim enjoyed the sunshine and frequent visits to Mexico.

Lorelyn's many childhood memories stemmed from downtown Bozeman. Her grandfather, Earl Marshall, founded Marshall Furniture, and was on the executive committee for the planning and building of The Baxter Hotel in 1929.

Her father, Loren, owned Marshall Furniture throughout the 1950s.

As the granddaughter of the late Lou Howard (Bobcat band director 1908-1946, Howard Hall, MSU), she was surrounded by music her entire life. Lorelyn had a beautiful singing voice. She enjoyed singing with the Ennis Community Choir and the Madison Valley Presbyterian Church choir for many years.

She was a member of the Madison Valley Presbyterian Church in Ennis, and served several years as a church elder, committee member and an organist.

Other activities she loved were playing mahjong and volunteer work. She had many friends, and always welcomed visitors with her warm smile and wonderful hospitality.

Though she was active in many things during her life, her most important mission was caring for her family and loved ones, which she continued until the moment of her passing. We will miss her so.

Lorelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in August of this year; parents, Loren and Leolyn Marshall; in-laws, Harry and Alma Walker; nephews, Mark Walker and Mike Walker; and niece, Kathy Ludwig.

Lorelyn is survived by a son, Tom, Bozeman; daughters, Tammi (Lenny) Dour, Roseburg, Ore., and Sherry (Curt) Pendleton, Dillon; grandchildren, Kristen (Jack) Thomas, Boise, Idaho, Matthew (Danielle) Dooley, Roseburg, Or., Marshall Walker, Pony/Bozeman, Pierce and Josee Pendleton, Dillon; and a great-grandson, Walker Jackson Thomas, who was born Nov. 29 in Boise.

Surviving brothers-in-law are Harry (Jeanette) Walker, Mesa, Ariz., Charles (Charlotte) Walker, Craig, and Dan (Helen) Walker, Billings, and their families.

Also surviving are Uncle Donald Bodley, and cousins Marshall Bennett, Butch Bodley, Steve Bodley and Brenda Anderson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, at the Madison Valley Presbyterian Church in Ennis, with the Rev. Jean Johnson officiating.

Jesse Franklin Barnes

1925 - 2011

Jesse Franklin Barnes, Sun City West, Ariz., and long time resident of Dillon, died peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 27.

He was originally from New Mexico, and joined the Army after he graduated from high school. He served his country as a combat infantryman until the end of WWII.

After his return from Europe he went to college in New Mexico. After graduation he met his wife of 55 years, Betty Jean Anderson (Barnes), who preceded him to heaven.

Frank moved to Dillon from Malta as a transfer with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). He made his home in Dillon with his family in the mid 1960s, and retired from the BLM in 1981 after working in the Washington, D.C. area. He and his wife returned to Dillon before moving to Arizona.

He enjoyed the outdoors, and spent his free time with his kids exploring Dillon and the surrounding areas.

He was interested in genealogy and after he retired from the BLM he traced relatives, documented family history, and shared stories with loved ones. He was also active in community dinner theater along with Betty, and shared the stage with her.

Frank is survived by his sons, Willam (Melanie), San Diego, Calif., and Harold (Patti), Bermuda Dunes, Calif.; a daughter, Carol (Brian) Miller, Chandler, Ariz.; and his beloved grandchildren, Zach and Jen, Tyler, Ashley, Kellie, Jese, Hunter and Halle Grace.

A private family memorial is pending.

Shirley Rae Banks

1927 - 2011

Shirley Rae Banks, of Dillon, passed away at Barrett Hospital and Healthcare on Nov. 16.

She was born on Jan. 22, 1927, in Harlem, to Bernard and Ida Lundberg.

Shirley attended Helena public schools, and graduated with a B.A. from Western Montana College.

She spent 32 years doing what she loved, teaching elementary school and mentoring children across western Montana.

Shirley married Norman Banks on Aug. 23, 1969. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her son, Gary Ogilvie of Lincoln; three adult grandchildren and their spouses; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held in her honor at a later date.

Lisa Renee Tilton

1987 - 2011

Lisa Renee Tilton went to be with our Lord on Nov. 5, in the loving arms of her parents, following a heroic battle against leukemia.

Lisa was born on Nov. 23, 1987, in Billings, to Carla (Doll) Tilton and Daniel Tilton.

An avid sportswoman, Lisa competed in the Special Olympics for years, earning many ribbons and medals. She also had a passion for making latch hook rugs. The black belt that she earned in Taekwondo was one of her proudest achievements.

Following graduation from high school, Lisa worked at Taco Bell. She was active in the Anglican Church, and loved fellowship with the members of the church.

She will be remembered by all who knew her for a sense of humor and love of mischief, but most of all for her gentle, caring spirit.

Lisa is survived by her parents; her grandparents, Adrian and Dorothy Doll; her uncle, Brian Doll; her aunt, Susan (Tilton) Chiovaro; her uncle and aunt, Sandy and Jean (Tilton) James; her cousins, Tony, Joe and Nathan Chiovaro, Corby and Owen James, Amy (James) Kadrmas, Adrian, Allyson and Ian Doll, as well as her many friends.

Lisa passed away while undergoing a bone marrow transplant in Seattle, Wash.

A memorial service was held in Billings, Nov. 19, at the Word of Life Church.

Maj. Gen. John James Womack

1920 - 2011

That big booming voice that called out to so many on the streets of Dillon was silenced on 11-11-11. The General led his last command on Veterans Day after suffering a severe stroke on Nov. 6.

John “Jim” Womack was born in Ennis on Sept. 26, 1920, to Frances and Emmett Womack. He was a 1938 graduate of Ennis High School, and earned his degree from Montana State Normal College in 1947. He was awarded a masters degree in education in 1955.

Jim met Vivian Marie Love, and they were married in November 1942. There were four boys born to this union. Vivian and Jim lost their two middle sons. Jon D. passed away in 1970 with a brain tumor. Joe, founder of the Dillonite Daily, died in 2000 from complications of Type 1 diabetes.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in April of 1942. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1945 at Fort Bennington, Ga. He joined the Montana National Guard in May of 1949. He served as a Company and Battalion Commander.

In 1969, Col. Womack was appointed to the office of the Adjutant General of the Montana National Guard. He was promoted to the rank of Major General, and held that office until his retirement in January of 1981.

Jim had a variety of business interests in the area including founding the Dillon Cable TV system, Carter Creek Mining Company, Pacific Mining, Minerals Engineering and many other enterprises with his long time partners and close friends, Carl Davis and John Erb. Many remember him as their teacher and many others remember him as Principal Womack.

His hobbies include going to garage and estate sales. He was an avid collector of books on Western history. He co-founded the Western Historical Library with Steve Hamilton in Three Forks with over 14,000 volumes at present time.

The general leaves behind his wife of 69 years he lovingly called Little Grammie; his sons, Jim and Jack (Kathy); daughter-in-law, Brenda Womack and adopted daughter Juanita Browne; grandchildren, Jon, Dillon, Jennifer, Jeff, Carson, Kylie, Alexa and Wyatt; two great-grandchildren; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special family and friends.

At his request, cremation has taken place. A visitation was held Tuesday evening, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Brundage Funeral Chapel.

Services will be held today, at 1 p.m., at the Dillon National Guard Armory. Refreshments will follow. A private interment will take place at a later date.

Ruth Elizabeth (Daly) Overby

1922 - 2011

Ruth Elizabeth (Daly) Overby, 89, of Seattle, Wash., passed away peacefully in her sleep Nov. 5.

Ruth (Bette) was born to Larry and Florence (Marchesseau) Daly on Aug. 18, 1922, in Missoula.

Her grandparents, Edmund and Elizabeth Ann Marchesseau, were Grasshopper Valley pioneers.

Bette received her under-graduate degree at the University of Montana, began her teaching career at Beaverhead High school in Dillon, and later attended the University of Washington for her post-graduate degree. She continued to root for the Montana Grizzlies and UW Huskies throughout her life.

Bette married Jay Sandberg in 1943, and they had four children. Upon Jay's death in 1966, Bette raised her children as a single mother while teaching full time.

Bette later became a counselor for the Seattle School District. She cared deeply for children, and worked tirelessly on their behalf.

In 1972, Bette married a fellow Montanan and vice principal for the Seattle School District, Per Overby. They both retired in 1979, and enjoyed many adventures traveling the world together.

Although she lived in Seattle, she was extremely proud of her Montana roots, and her relatives living in the Grasshopper Valley, Polaris, and the surrounding Dillon area.

Bette was known for her style and quick wit, and because she possessed the Irish gift of gab, she made friends wherever she went. Bette was passionate about education, the arts, reading, knitting, travel and women’s rights. She had great affection for animals, and loved musical cards and funny hats.

Bette is survived by her husband of 39 years, Per Overby; three children, Christina Hovind (Paul); Joy Barnett (Randy); and Kurt Sandberg; four grandchildren, Melissa, Jamie, Rachel and Randal Jay; seven great-grandchildren; and her brother, Paul Daly.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jonathan Sandberg.

Bette has left us with a great legacy that will live on through her family and friends.

Ernest “Ernie” Michael Rebich

1929 - 2011

Today, Oct. 22, was a great day. Dad spent the day with his family watching his great-grandson play flag football. That evening he went to be with our Heavenly Father with his family by his side, and our family is truly blessed and it is an honor to call you Dad and Grandpa. We love you and will miss you deeply.

Dad was born on Sept. 22, 1929, on the family ranch in Madison County, to Michael W and Frances A Rebich. He was the youngest of five children.

He was married to Wilma “Billie” Rebich for many years. She passed away Oct. 30, 2002. Together they had two children.

He is survived by his son, Larry Rebich, Billings, and daughter, Sandra Daenzer (Doug), Dillon; grandchildren, Casey Trimble, Liberty Beyer, Kelli Trimble-Woods (Jimmy Woods), Kami Trimble (Aaron Tash) and Stacey Trimble; and great-grandchildren, Payton Trimble, Tess and Taytum Tash, all from Dillon; Walter Rebich, brother lives in California.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edward and Elmer; and sister, Josephine.

Dad attended school in Twin Bridges, and he worked the family ranch near the Point of Rocks until 1976 when the ranch was sold after his mom died.

After his retirement from ranching he was the train engineer in Virginia City until he retired in 2004.

He hauled potatoes for Cottom Farms, and helped out some local ranchers with farming, and most recently he worked at The Mini in Dillon. (I was sure it would be a full service gas station within six months and I believe Jeff enjoyed having a new boss.)

He loved the people, locals and travelers alike, and if you weren’t careful, you were late for work because dad loved to visit.

Dad enjoyed fishing, spending time with his family, and gardening. He loved our family time with all the kids and chaos with it. He spent his days around the place taking care of the horses, chickens, ducks, rabbit, dogs, cats, and whatever else that needed to be done.

At Dad’s request cremation has taken place, and family and friends shared some memories on Nov. 8 at the Lion’s Den.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Beaverhead Ambulance, Dillon Fire Department, or Beaverhead Search and Rescue.

Sally Ann Gilmore

1941 - 2011

Sally Ann Gilmore, 70, of Dillon, passed away Nov. 4, at Parkview Acres Care and Rehabilitation Center, after a lengthy illness.

She was born Jan. 3, 1941, in Miles City, to Charles and Naomi (Wells) Lewis.

The joy of her life was her son, John Paul Koch, who passed away tragically in 1994. She was happily married to Ray Gilmore of Dillon for 14 years when he passed away in 2005.

She spent her life caring for others, and worked on many ranches in the area, as well as Parkview Acres Care and Rehabilitation Center. If someone needed help, you could bet that Sally would be there. One of her favorite things to do would be to go shopping. Sally will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Sharon Lewis, Dillon; a niece, Cindy Pape, Grant; and nephew, Chuck Lewis, Hamilton.

As per Sally’s request there will be no services scheduled.

Judy Fae (Knapp) Flores

1956 - 2011

Judy Fae (Knapp) Flores was born Dec. 6, 1956, to Jack and Nancy Knapp in Wallace, Idaho.

She died Nov. 5, at Barrett Hospital surrounded by her loving family and friends.

She enjoyed camping, cooking, working with ceramics, and doing crossword puzzles.

She enjoyed spending time with her four grandchildren, Belle, Hawken, Everett and Jeriko.

She is survived by her sons, Mark (Lily) and Jesse Roach; brothers, Ted, Tony (Teri) and Inky, of Dillon, and Jess (Kim), Utah. She is also survived by her special Aunt Billie (Chet) Huxtable, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Helen; and a brother, Jeff.

A celebration of her life will be held Friday, with a luncheon at 11 a.m. at the Beaverhead Baptist Church.

Arthur “Art” Christensen

1919 - 2011

Arthur (Art) Christensen, 92, of Dillon, passed away on Oct. 25.

He died peacefully, surrounded by family and the medical staff he dearly loved at Barrett Memorial Hospital.

Art was born in the old house on Carter Creek, the heart of the family homestead, on April 11, 1919. This was the same home to which he later brought his bride, Margie, and with her raised their family.

He was the first of three children born to Maren (Jensen) and Nels Christensen, immigrants from Denmark who came to America in search of a better life.

Times were tough when Art was young, and tough times produce tough people. He began his lifelong career as a sheepherder at the age of three. A second and much briefer stint as an apprentice with the family moonshine operation followed.

He was eight years old when he began his formal education in Dillon. It didn’t make sense to send a single child such a great distance to school, so his folks waited until his sisters Anna (Ann) and Helen were ready, and they all went together.

None of the three was proficient in English, and Ann walked with a limp as a result of polio, setting her up as the target of bullies. Art was Ann’s protector, and he never walked away from a fight.

The three little “round headed kids” set up housekeeping in a little cabin on the north end of town, returning to the ranch to work on weekends.

Art worked hard at school and distinguished himself there. He excelled at public speaking - a talent he was certain his kids must possess - and he went on to represent the state of Montana at the national FFA competition in 1938.

His college education at Montana State College, later MSU, in Bozeman, was interrupted by the United States’ entrance into World War II. Along with the rest of the 163rd Infantry, Art set out to serve his country. This adventure found him in a variety of places including Ft. Benning, Ga., Ft. Lewis, Wash., Australia and New Guinea.

At the war’s end, Art returned home to run the family farm and ranch. In the fall of 1949 he was introduced to Margaret (Margie) Wiedman in Dillon, and three months later they were married.

He took her up to the Sweetwater to share his home, a modest abode without running water or electricity. Babies followed.

Their first, Arthur Dale, was born the following November, but lived only three days. He was followed by a sister, Marian, two brothers, Alan and Calvin, and a baby sister, Donna, all within five years.

Art would rather work than eat his dinner, and somehow he figured everyone else felt the same. He instilled a strong work ethic in his children and grandchildren, something that took them years to appreciate. He was a tough taskmaster. People took pride in stating that they had worked for Art Christensen.

Art loved to tell stories and he loved to dance. Until the past six months, if there was the right kind of music and a level floor for dancing, he was certain to be out there kicking up his heels. Somehow a dance just wasn’t a dance without Art Christensen.

Art was a life long member of the local Lutheran Church. He served as chairman of the Beaverhead Soil Conservation District for over 60 years. He was a member of many organizations including the Danish Brotherhood, American Legion and Kiwanis to name a few.

In 2001 Art and Margie moved into town. Having spent his entire life on the ranch, his family was concerned with how well he would adapt. He surprised everyone as he took to it like a fish to water.

This put him closer to his senior companions and many others he would serve.

Everyone recognized Art and his boys in the little blue Prius as he chauffeured them around the county. He lived to serve and in this he was a model for us all.

Art is survived by his daughter Marian (Don) Olsen and children Elizabeth (Brian) Campbell, Maren, Jennifer (Aaron) Brown and Jonathan; son, Alan (Cheryl) and children Tony, Michael (Caitlin), Anna (Tim)Warburton and Catey; son, Calvin (Jodi) and children Ryan and Cali; and daughter, Donna (Pat) Robert and children Pamela (Terry) Ehlert, Casey (Kristie), David (Stacey) and Robert.

He was blessed with 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Helen, numerous nieces and nephews, an untold number of friends, and a grateful community.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Ann; wife, Margie; and son, Arthur Dale.

Visitation was Monday evening at Brundage Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Nov. 1.

Memorials may be made to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Barrett Memorial Hospital, the Dillon YMCA, or the charity of one’s choice.

Robert “Bob” Mountain

1936 - 2011

Robert "Bob" Mountain, 75, Jamestown, N.D., died Oct. 27, at Sanford Health in Fargo, N.D.

Bob was born March 27, 1936, in Calvin, N.D., the son of Carl and Marjorie (McLean) Mountain.

He graduated from Calvin High School in 1954, and North Dakota State University in 1958.

On Jan. 18, 1963, Bob married the love of his life, Charlotte Fischer.

After graduation he worked in Jamestown as assistant county agent before taking a job as an ag representative at James River National Bank.

In 1976 they moved to Dillon where he was president of Norwest Bank. They returned to Jamestown in 1986, and Bob co-founded Midland Investment with Dan Schorsch, where he worked with land management and ag consulting. He later worked with the Village Family Services in Fargo as a financial counselor.

Bob was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Buffalo Museum. He was an active Shriner, member of the Jamestown Shrine Mystics unit and the Jesters.

Bob enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, and spending winters in Yuma, Ariz.

Bob is survived by his wife, Charlotte, Jamestown; three children, Robert Mountain, Fargo, N.D., Audra (Mike) Ferris, Dillon, and James Mountain, Fargo, N.D.; two grandchildren, Bailey and Jordan Ferris, Dillon; two sisters-in-law, DeLight (ElRay) Fercho, Streeter, N.D., and Sheila (Milt) Rea, Forest Lake, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Adeline Dahl.

A memorial service was held Oct. 31 at the United Presbyterian Church, Jamestown, with Pastor Terry Anderson officiating.

Arrangements were made by Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, N.D.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Jamestown Hospital Foundation or the Shriners Children's Hospital.

Brenda Lee Weber

1970 - 2011

Brenda Lee Weber, 41, died Oct. 27 in London, United Kingdom, of sudden complications of a congenital brain cyst.

She was born July 15, 1970 in Dillon, the daughter of James and Louise Marchesseault.

A graduate of Gonzanga University in Spokane, Wash., Brenda worked as an advertising and public relations account executive, and later as a freelance writer.

Brenda was as much at home on the Marchesseault Ranch as she was leading her husband of 14 years, Joe Weber, and daughters Claire and Ava on adventures through India and Europe.

Along with travel, her many interestes included reading and writing, art, history, theater, humor, and food - especially cheese, wine and chocolate.

Brenda was a fitness enthusiast, and completed a marathon and numerous 10K runs.

She had friends all over the world, and focused above all on family. Her gifts to others include being an organ donor.

In addition to her parents, husband, and daughters, Brenda is survived by her sister, Jennifer; brothers, David (Barbara) and Romeo (Cheryl); many loving in-laws; and 26 nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Nov. 20 at Grace United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow at the church. For more information, call 406-683-4594.

Patricia B. Comer

1938 - 2011

Patricia B. Comer, 73, of Dillon, died of natural causes Oct. 19. A memorial service in her honor was held Oct. 22nd at Brundage Funeral Home.

Pat was a very active member of Eastern Star, Acacia White Shrine and Daughter of the Nile. She was a past Worthy Matron, and Past Worthy High Priestess. She enjoyed visiting members in the hospital, and bringing them roses from her garden. Her hobbies included reading, watching Westerns, and most of all spending time with her grandchildren.

Pat was born March 17, 1938 in North Baltimore, Ohio, to John D. and Nina Virgie Brunett. At the age of six she and her family moved to Livingston. Upon graduation from Park County High in Livingston, she worked as a clerk for Sax and Fryer, and enjoyed visiting with her customers. She had a great memory for names and faces.

Survivors include her husband, Albert L (Les), of 46 years; daughter, Vicki (Tom) Dale, Great Falls; a son, James (Gigi) Comer, Columbia Falls; a sister, Nancy Fenwick, Bozeman; nephews, John (Jane) Howard, Connecticut, and Dan (Vicki) Howard, Livingston; five grandchildren, Patrick Comer, Leslie Dale, Rachael Bower, Braden Comer and Karissa Comer.

James Edward Williamson

1932 - 2011

James Edward Williamson, 79, passed away Oct. 13.

He was born to Julius and Agnes (Sorenson) Williamson in Bristol, S.D. He attended country school and graduated from Bristol High School in 1950.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1951, and served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters hauling ammunition to Korea. In 1956 he entered the U.S. Air Force, serving in Greenland and various bases in the United States.

Jim came back to Bristol and worked for Nels Anderson and Hansmeir and Son. In 1976 he left for Auburn, Wash., and worked moving trailer houses; he moved to Dillon in 1980, and worked for the Beaverhead County Highway Department. He also served as a hunting guide and did taxidermy work. James entered Parkview Acres Rest Home in 2008.

His joys were hunting, fishing and fixing things; one of Jim’s pleasures was having coffee with his friends.

He is survived by a brother, Wesley Williamson, Bristol, S.D.; five nieces, Debbie Berthigume and Theresa (Dave) Wodecki, Holyoke, Mass., Pam (William) Dylla, Bristol, Diane (John) St John, Jackson, Tenn., and Gwen (James) Bates, Manuel, Tex.; two nephews, Wayne (Marilyn) Williamson, Alvin, Tex., and Gene (Judy) Williamson, Bristol, S.D.; 12 great-nieces and -nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his parents and two brothers, Arthur and Kenneth Williamson.

Memorial services were held Monday at Brundage Chapel in Dillon.

Fred Charles Stibal

1936 - 2011

Fred Stibal, Oct. 7, 1936 to Oct. 9, 2011. Services were held Oct. 14 at Brundage Chapel.

Seventy-five years later, this is what we know.

You were born Fred Charles Stibal, Oct 7, 1936, to Charles and Mamie Stibal of Roberts, Idaho.

You graduated from Corvallis High School, and attended Montana State where you rode broncs for the rodeo team, but always wished you had joined the chorus instead.

Drafted into the army, with time spent in Germany, you hated being told what to do, something that never changed; and were grateful for the day when you could come home and joined your dad and life long business partner, your brother, Charles and Sandra Stibal in ranching. Along with Chick, you always looked out for your older sister, Shirley (Auntie Ber), who was always really in charge of you both.

You met your future wife, Donnee Shaffner, wrestling calves at a branding. “Ain’t no woman like the one you got.”

Together you spent your winters in Roberts, Idaho, and made your way back to the Centennial Valley for the summer and fall. It’s hard to tell which was your favorite season, irrigating or calving. Wherever it was, mom was right by your side. She loved it all as much as you did until she passed away Oct 1, 1993.

A respected cattleman, you truly are a cowboy. Your compassion for animals is unmatched. You love your dogs, cats and horses, but mostly your cows. You’re sentimental about the land by which you live, the friends and the neighbors. Good fences and green grass matter; and there is no other place on earth that you would rather be than your valley. You have always just wanted to work.

You are an irrigator. You always prided yourself for getting every bump flooded. Your idea of a big fancy tractor is the Massey and ditcher.

Next to cattle, music was probably your greatest passion. You're probably the only cowboy that listens to classical music in your pickup, and despises country music, loving Tina, Aretha, Whitney and Diana. You have a mean shimmy. After your cows and music, your arrowhead collection was your pride and joy, and your only real hobby.

You were the one that didn't want to go to the party, but always the last one to leave.

Along the way you raised two pretty good daughters, Lynda Berg and Lori Kraft, who married two pretty good son-in-laws, Jess Berg and Brad Kraft, who gave you three pretty good grandkids, Seth and Anna Kraft, and Kenadie Berg.

You are our dad, our grandpa, and your girls’ favorite dance partner; and we hope you know the legacy you have left us with. You got to spend your last summer in the valley, and for that we will be forever grateful. We know there is a big branding party going on in heaven, and you’re finally dancing with the one you have waited for so long to see.

Nancy Sue Lane

1944 - 2011

Nancy Sue Lane, 67, of Dillon, joined her Savior in heaven, Friday, Sept. 30, surrounded by her family.

She will be very sorely missed by family and many friends, until we meet again.

Nancy was born in Bismarck, N.D., April 4, 1944, the third daughter of Bess and Buss Nelson.

The family moved to Great Falls, where the girls grew up and attended school.

Nancy was married to Paul Laird in 1966, and remarried to James Lane in 1992. Jim and Nancy celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary on Aug. 28 of this year.

Nancy worked in technical support for Fluor Corporation in Irvine, Calif., for many years, and moved with Jim to Dillon upon retirement. She created and ran a successful online business which she very much enjoyed.

She loved camping, antiquing, quilting, painting, sewing, spoiling her family, and her beloved pets.

Nancy adored her husband and family, and was blessed with many good friends.

She is survived by her husband, Jim; her children, Chad (Elizabeth), Holly and Sally Laird; five grandchildren, Ian, Abby, Hazel, Johnny and Aubrey; and sisters, Ginny and Rene (Swede).

She was preceded in death by her dear parents and many other precious loved ones.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery.

John W. Carr

1920 - 2011

John W. Carr, 91, of Medford, Ore., passed away Monday, Sept. 26.

He was born May 12, 1920, in Dell, to Emma (Hardgrove) Carr and Frank M. Carr.

He graduated from Beaverhead County High School, and from the University of Washington, Seattle, Wash.

John married Evelyn “Jackie” (Meine) Carr on June 15, 1943, in Seattle, Wash. They moved to Medford in 1967.

John served in the Marine Corps during World War II, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant. He was stationed in Saipan.

John owned Carr’s City Fuel, and was a retired motel owner and consultant.

He loved fishing, traveling, videotaping his grandkids, and taking long walks.

John and Evelyn both enjoyed dancing and listening to big band music.

He was a member of the SAE Fraternity, Elks Club, Knights of Columbus, Lively Rogues Dancing Club, and the American Legion.

John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Evelyn; daughters, Janet (John) Connole, Joan (John) Jackson, and Jennifer (Bob) Johnson; eight grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Anne Peters, Gladys Walker and Francis Virts; and brother, Fred Carr.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 4 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with Father Herbert Pins officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the cancer society or a charity of your choice.

Rosalee B. Richardson

1935 - 2011

Rosalee B. Richardson passed away Sunday morning, Sept. 25, age 76, at Barrett Memorial Hospital, with her loving family by her side.

She was born to Walter and Ruth Bastian in Dillon, July 4,1935 as a “firecracker baby.” She was raised in Armstead, where she helped out at the family business, The Reno Bar and Grill.

Rosalee later moved to Dillon, and that is where she met and married Henry “Heinie” Richardson in 1955. They later divorced but remained close friends.

Rosalee proudly worked for Beaverhead County for 45 years. She was Deputy Clerk and Recorder from 1953 to1957 and 1965 to 1990. She became Clerk and Recorder in 1991, and remained in that position until her retirement in 2006. She made many lifelong friends while working at the courthouse. Those friendships were very important to her and remained dear to her heart.

Rosalee was a member of the Montana Association of Clerk and Recorders. She was also an active member of the Dillon Elk’s Lodge, and participated in many Elk’s activities.

Rosalee had a special place in her heart for all her furry friends. She loved and spoiled them all.

Rosalee was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Ruth Bastian.

Rosalee is survived by her children Mike (Candi) Richardson, Dillon, and Kim (Jim) Salmonsen, Butte; grandchildren, Brady and Kadi Richardson, Casey Schilling and Kyle Salmonsen; special friends, Heinie Richardson and Dick Newton; a sister, Lorraine (Jim) Davis, Glendale, Ariz., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in memory of Rosalee to the Beaverhead County Humane Society or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Visitation will be today from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at Brundage Funeral Home with the Elk’s Eleventh Hour Ceremony starting at 7:30 p.m..

There will be a memorial service tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Brundage Funeral Home with interment immediately following.

Lucile Lockridge Wellman

1910 - 2011

Lucile Wellman, age 101, passed away on Sept. 25.

Lucile Lockridge Wellman was born on April 13, 1910, in her parents ranch home east of Cameron. Nolen and Susie Lockridge had three daughters, Helen, Ethelyn and Lucile.

Lucile went to school at the Bear Creek Schoolhouse, graduated from Ennis High School, and attended Western Montana College in Dillon.

On Sept. 21, 1942, she married Fred Wellman who was born in Geneva, Neb., and later moved to the Bear Creek area from Wilsal. They lived on the family ranch throughout their married life. Fred passed away on Sept. 24, 1974.

Being an incredibly gifted musician, Lucile played the piano as a member of a dance band for local dances, weekly at the nursing home, often at community parties, and for many years she was the organist for Sunday service at the Presbyterian Church in Ennis.

Lucile is survived by two daughters, Sue (Tom) Webster and Janet Wellman; five grandchildren, Dan (Teresa) Webster, Roy Webster, Scott (Amanda) Wessel, Susan Wessel, and Fred (Kandis) Wessel; and three great-grandchildren, Cole and Kelly Webster, and Cody Wessel; and many other relatives.

Memorials are suggested to the Madison Valley Presbyterian Church of Ennis, or the Tobacco Root Mountain Care Center in Sheridan.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Madison Valley Presbyterian Church in Ennis, with Rev. Jean Johnson officiating.

Interment will follow in the Madison Valley Cemetery in Ennis.

Christine Jakin Rodgers

1911 - 2011

Christine Jakin Rodgers (1911-2011) died on Sept. 14. Cremation has taken place.

Christine was born in Topeka, Kan., and was educated in Montana, gaining her teaching qualification and master's degree at Western. She taught in the Mary Innes school.

Christine worked as a counselor for Girls' State program for a number of years, and was an ardent supporter of this experience for young women.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 63 years.

She and H. W. Rodgers, her husband of 71 years, will be buried in the Rodgers plot at Mountain View Cemetery.

She is survived by Lois, Simon and Sally Reynolds.

Brundage Funeral Home will have charge of the private service.

Frank Christian Thompson

1915 - 2011

Frank Christian Thompson, 96, a Wolf Creek area rancher, passed away Sept. 6 at the Masonic Home in Helena, of natural causes.

Frank was born april 7, 1915, at the family homestead on the Middle Fork of the Dearborn River known as Stearns. His parents were Frank Tobias and Lia Christine Steinbach Thompson.

He attended area country schools for several years. His mother passed away when he was eight years old.

Inheriting a sum of money from her, he purchased his uncle Theodore Thompson's homestead on the North Fork of the Dearborn. Thus began his land acquisition at the age of eight.

Because his father began spending winters in California, Frank was educated at Union Central School until he finished his junior year of high school. His father had him stay at the ranch the following year.

His sister, Frances, insisted that he finish high school. He stayed with her in Dillon, and graduated from Beaverhead County High School. In high school, he participated in football, and was a leader on the debate team.

When Frank was 20 years old, his father informed him he had to run this outfit because Frank, Sr., had to go to California, and care for his ailing brother, Theodore. They ran both sheep and cattle.

Frank has been ranching ever since, constantly increasing his land holdings, and improving his livestock.

Fay Elizabeth Brown became his bride on Sept. 3, 1939, and to this union four children were born, Tom, Nancy, Art and Ken.

His service to his community, county, state and country were vast.

Always an advocate for the 4-H program, he served as a leader for 24 years.

The Soil Conservation Service was another of his long term programs, both local, state and national, for over 50 years.

He was a member of the Eastern Star, Masonic Lodge, Shrine and Scottish Rite; school board member and airport board member.

Frank and Fay were designated goodwill ambassadors to Japan, Russia, Germany, Australia and New Zealand. They received the MSU Rancher of the Year award in 1996.

A sister, Frances Lia Sewell Wendell, and his wife of 68 years, Fay, preceded him in death.

Survivors include Tom R. (Mindy) Thompson, Wolf Creek, and Ken (Nicole) Lewis, North Pole, Alaska; great-grandchildren, Bailey Kay, Kacey and Amy Blake, Cade Thompson, Remy Frank and Callie Elizabeth Johnson, Trace Steele, Katie Nell, Elias Christian and and Tessa Claire Johnson, Jep, Devon, Trista and Cinch Richie, Corbin Thompson, Tyler and Logan Lewis; one niece and one nephew.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at Anderson, Stephenson, Wilke Funeral Home in Helena.

A luncheon followed the service, and interment was in the Augusta Cemetery with Masonic rites.

Memorials can be sent to the Masonic Home, 2010 Masonic Home Road, Helena, MT 59601, to the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children in Spokane, Wash., or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Anna Marie Andersen Tovey

1915 - 2011

Anna Marie Andersen Tovey passed away Sept. 8.

She was born Oct. 16, 1915, to Laura Hansen Andersen and Clarence Andersen.

She grew up on a sheep ranch along Grasshopper Creek with her sisters Laura LaBuff and Helen Koeneke.

She first learned English when she attended grade school in Dillon, as her family spoke Danish exclusively on the ranch. She graduated from Beaverhead County High School.

Shortly after she graduated, she became a medical receptionist where she met William D. Tovey. They were married in 1941, and she became a step-mother to 13-year-old Virginia Louise (Tovey) Patton, and 7-year-old Carol Ann (Tovey) South. The new family lived in Dillon, where William was a developer and insurance agent.

Anna loved picnicking, fishing, and traveling to see her many grandchildren. She was also active with the lady Elks.

After her husband, Bill, died in 1969, she became re-involved in the Danish Brotherhood, and developed a special friendship with Holger Carlson.

Anna is survived by her two sisters, Laura LaBuff and Helen Koeneke; her step-daughters, Virginia (John) Patton and Carol (Phil) South; her seven grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

A viewing was held Monday at Brundage Funeral Home with graveside services following at Mountain View Cemetery.

Shirley Diane Barrett

1958 - 2011

Shirley Diane Barrett, 53, passed away on Aug. 30, surrounded by her loving family in her home in Dillon.

Shirley was born Aug. 15, 1958, to William “Toby” Shew and Jessie Christensen. She grew up in Grant, and graduated from Beaverhead County High School in 1976.

She has three children, Cody, Shonna and Cassie.

She enjoyed the great outdoors, working in her yard, and she especially enjoyed sunflowers, carnations and wildflowers.

She loved doing arts and crafts, and had a special place in her heart for her family and friends.

Shirley is survived by her children, Cody (Ashley) Barrett, Great Falls, Shonna (Brian) Graham, Dillon, and Cassie Killsnight, Dillon; her mother, Jessie (Bruce) Corman; grandchildren, four-year-old Jaden Barrett, five-year-old Nes Graham, and two-year-old Ganon Graham; her faithful companion, Chico; a sister, Gail Shew; a brother, Sheaune Corman, Dillon; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles; and good friend, David Dray.

She was preceeded in death by her grandparents, Sarah and Lee Christensen; father, Toby Shew; and a brother, Gary Shew.

A memorial service was held Sept. 2 at Brundage Funeral Home, followed by a potluck reception. Burial services will be held at a later date, during her favorite time of the year when the leaves were turning and the fall colors start to show.

Ethel Taylor Picton

1918 - 2011

Ethel Taylor Picton, 93, passed away on Aug. 26, at Parkview Acres Care Center.

She was born near Graettinger, Iowa, to Earl and Elsie Taylor, on Feb. 20, 1918, and moved to a farm near Mandan, N.D., at the age of two.

Following graduation from Mandan High School in 1934, she helped with work on the farm for two years before attending the State Teachers College in Dickinson, where she completed a two-year teaching program.

She taught at Almont and Watford City in North Dakota, and at Circle and Malta before returning to Dickinson to complete her bachelor’s degree in 1944.

She taught girls’ physical education at the college before leaving for New York City, where she studied occupational therapy at Columbia University.

After receiving her occupational therapy certificate in 1946, she worked as a therapist at the Veterans Hospital in Fargo, N.D., until her marriage to Paul O. Picton on Aug. 13, 1949.

They lived in Billings where Paul was on the faculty at Rocky Mountain College, and in Missoula when he completed his master’s degree.

Following that they lived in Corvallis and Lewistown, where Ethel began teaching again.

They came to Dillon in 1958, and it wasn’t long until she was back in a classroom; then moved into the Parkview Junior High building when it was completed, and taught sixth grade social studies for 24 years, before retiring in 1985.

During those years she earned her master’s degree.

Before her retirement, she was the editor for the Delta Kappa Gamma Society magazine for 19 years. She liked to read, and was a long-time member of Dillon’s Shakespeare Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, in 2001.

She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Ann, retired USAF living in Ireland; her sister, Mildred Picton; and niece, Linda Hughitt and her family of The Dalles, Ore.; her brother-in-law, Harold Picton, Bozeman, and his family; and special cousin, Loretta Haught, Rockville, Md., and her family.

At her request, no funeral services will be held.

Eugene Ray Munson

1953 - 2011

Eugene Munson was born on Dec. 17, 1953, to Kenneth and Nola (Hall) Munson in Yakima, Wash.

Eugene was raised and educated in Yakima, and then lived on the Cibecue Indian Reservation in Arizona for 10 years.

Eugene entered the U.S. Army, and following an honorable discharge, he worked as a truck driver throughout the U.S.

He was employed at Summit Valley Turf in Whitehall at the time of his death.

He enjoyed hunting and the outdoors.

Eugene died Aug. 29, near Twin Bridges, as the result of an automobile accident.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia; daughters, Debra Bresure and Ashlyn Munson; sons, Jacob and Joshua Munson; parents, Ken and Nola Munson; a sister, Lorie Hayden; and brothers, Bill and Ken Munson.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Sept. 02, at Holy Family Church, Anaconda.

Paul “Sonny” Jay Manis

1914 - 2011

Paul ‘Sonny’ Jay Manis, 97, of Big Timber, passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 23.

Paul was born Jan. 12, 1914, in Big Timber, to Tom and Ethel Manis.

Paul grew up on Otter Creek, and attended school in Big Timber where he graduated from Sweet Grass County High School in 1930.

He worked for Leo Cremer on his ranch, and helped with rodeo stock.

On June 30, 1940, Paul married Adeline Sylvia Bergholm in Bozeman. Shortly thereafter they moved to Manhattan, where Paul worked for Dr. Heetderks on his ranch.

After having their first child, Dixie, they moved to a ranch in Harrison where Paul raised cattle and sheep. While in Harrison, Juanita was born.

Paul enjoyed hunting and working rodeos as a pick-up man, and occasionally did some team roping. He was also the local brand inspector, and traveled to several markets to assist other brand inspectors.

In 1960 the Manis family moved to Shelby, where Paul worked full time for the Livestock Commission as a state brand inspector.

Two years later he was transferred to Dillon, where he continued his work as a brand inspector until his retirement in 1979. Paul truly enjoyed his work.

After his retirement, Paul and Adeline returned to Big Timber. He weighed livestock at the Big Timber yard and scale for several years.

Paul enjoyed welding, and made over 350 branding irons.

Paul was preceded in death in 2003 by his wife of almost 63 years, Adeline; and in 2011 by his great-grandson, Gregg Hokanson.

He is survived by his daughters, Dixie (Alfred) Hokanson, Norris, and Juanita (Dick) Posten, Corvallis; five grandchildren, Tim (Susan) Hokanson, Norris, Kevin Hokanson, Sheridan, Keith (Ann) Hokanson, Norris, Shawn (Heidy) Grossman, Placerville, Calif., and Tamara Grossman, Las Vegas, Nev.; six great-grandchildren, Katie (Cory) Burtchett, Hailey, Josie, Gavin, Kassidy and Joree Hokanson; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Big Timber Evangelical Church, with interment following at Mountain View Cemetery.

Memorials in Paul’s name may be made to the Big Timber Community Food Bank or any Montana food bank.

Kenneth Irving Rolandson

1930 - 2011

Ken Rolandson of Dillon passed away on the morning of Aug. 28 due to complications of Alzheimer’s. He was 80 years old.

Kenneth Irving Rolandson was born on Oct. 30, 1930, in St. Paul, Minn., to Knute and Inga Rolandson.

Growing up in rural Minnesota, he led an exciting childhood filled with encounters with small-town personalities, and other events such as sitting around the town radio during much of World War II. A true slice of Americana, it was filled with the kinds of stories that populate Ken Burns documentaries, or the non-fiction of Tom Brokaw.

He met his wife of 58 years, Jean Rolandson, not long before they were married, on Jully 26, 1952. With their four children – Mary, Richard, Nancy and Michael – they migrated from Minnesota to Townsend, and Watford City, N.D., respectively, where Ken owned and operated John Deere businesses. It was this life that brought the Rolandsons to Dillon in 1971, and anyone who met Ken would more than likely know that his store, Rolandson Equipment, was where you could purchase all of your implement needs.

It was this infectious love for conversation that best characterized Ken’s bubbling and cheerful personality. Be it at John Deere, Big Sky Motors, Safeway, or a town function, one could always count on him striking up a conversation, whether you were a friend of many years, or just passing through town. From complimenting your looks, to reminiscing at length about his grandchildren, he never let silence fill the room. Until his final months, this locquaciousness remained, adding a bright spot to the days of the residents of, and visitors to, Renaissance alike.

The majority of his life was spent in the company of family and friends, particularly in Montana and Minnesota, but also through the country. Wintering in Florida, Ken and Jean were avid tennis fans, as well as bridge players, and they passed this love of game, sport and travel along to their children and grandchildren.

Often seen tending the lawn of his and Jean’s immaculate home, Ken would always greet you with a wave and smile before immersing himself in the newspaper or one of his many coffee table books. Later in life, he traveled the world from his living room, and one could be sure that the next time you saw him, he would share an anecdote or two about his daily findings.

He was proceeded in death by his wife, Jean, and son, Michael.

He is survived by his brother, Arlo Rolandson; sister, Lori (Robert) Hotvet; daughters, Mary (Shafi)

Shafaieh and Nancy (Darren) Daignault; son, Richard Rolandson; and nine grandchildren

Cremation has already taken place, and per Ken’s request no services will be held.

Memorials made be made to the Barrett Hospital and HealthCare Hospice.

Betty Lou Tolson

1943 - 2011

Betty Lou Tolson, long time resident of the Lima area, passed away peacefully on May 16, at her home, from complications of a stroke.

Betty was born in Watertown, S.D., on Sept. 18, 1943, to Alfred E. Wheelborg and Iona Marion Keller Wheelborg. She grew up in Escondido, Calif., where she graduated from Vista High School.

In 1961 Betty married her first love, Jimmie Dale Lee. During their marriage they had three children together, and later divorced. Betty had another son, Donald E. Branin.

She later found the love of her life, Thomas O. Tolson, with whom she shared the last 35 years of her life. Tom and his three sons joined Betty and her children, forming a large, loving family.

Betty lived her life for her family and friends. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and always put the needs of her family first. She was a great cook who loved to entertain. Holidays and big celebrations with her was nothing to be missed. She was a very talented crafter and also loved to crochet.

Through her years she became a great carpenter as well. Through the help of family and friends, she was able to build her dream homes.

One of her favorite things to do was gather around the patio table and enjoy a game of cards or dice with family anf friends, while everyone shared stories and laughter.

During her years in Quartzsite, Ariz., Betty and her husband built their own RV park from the ground up. They rented out to the dear snowbird friends who came back to join them for the winter year after year.

Betty Lou is survived by her devoted and beloved husband, Thomas Tolson; her children, David Lee and wife Monica, Dwayne Lee and wife Raiza, Denise Lee, Donnie Branin, Troy Tolson, Destry Tolson and Josh Tolson and wife Esther; grandchildren, Stephen Higley and wife Katrina, Jonathan Scollard, Tevyn, Christian and Dylan Branin, Onna Marie Lee, Corrina and Morgan Tolson; great-grandchildren, Thomas and Trinity Higley, Tayven Scollard, and another one on the way; her brothers and sisters, Beverly and Bill dickey, Dean and Deana Wheelborg, and Dennis and Rosalyn Wheelborg. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Susie, as well as many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Betty was the glue that held the family together, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her, and remain forever in our hearts.

Norman Granville Ashcraft

1927 - 2011

On Aug. 16, at 8:25 a.m., Norman Granville Ashcraft, 84, passed away at Barrett Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

He was born in Lexington, Mo., April 17, 1927, to Ernest and Fern Ashcraft.

In 1935 Norman's family moved to Wheeler, and remained there while his father worked on the building of the Fort Peck Dam.

Later his family moved to Roundup, where Norman graduated from high school and entered the Army during WWII. He served his country overseas in the Corp of Engineers.

While hitchhiking to Roundup after being discharged he passed through the Ruby Valley and swore he would make his home there one fine day. In 1948 he came to Twin Bridges with $60 and a chainsaw. He was a sawyer and lumberjack.

From childhood, his goal was to one day own a cattle ranch. With blood, sweat, and hard work over many years, Norman achieved his goal. He established a beautiful ranch on the Big Hole River, and loved every day on his land.

June 14, 1957, he married Loretta Gay Loveridge, his beloved wife of 54 years.

He is survived by his wife; three children, Norman "Chip", Silver Star, Elizabeth, Idaho, and Dave (Cindy), Twin Bridges; and 11 wonderful grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Rad Lawver, Ben, Jack, Matt, Jonathon, Katie and Kristen Ashcraft, Andrew, Anna, Thomas and Sarah Knapp.

He is also survived by two brothers, Dwight (Sally) Three Forks, and Bing, Twin Bridges; two sisters, Maida Lee Harper, Hardin, and Martha (Bill) Schnurr, Lombard, Ill.; and a brother-in-law, Chuck Vanderpas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Eleanor Vanderpas.

He left many nieces and nephews.

He taught many life lessons to his children, and many boys and girls that crossed his path. Rest dear heart, we love you dearly.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association, or the American Heart Association.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, at 10 a.m., at the Church of the Valley in Twin Bridges, with Rev. Ben Nardi officiating.

Interment with military honors will follow in the Twin Bridges Cemetery.

M. Virginia Smith Duffner

1926 - 2011

M. Virginia Smith Duffner passed away Aug. 16, surrounded by her family and friends.

After enjoying Saturday at her family reunion, she was preparing for a routine Sunday morning, when after bringing in the morning paper, she suffered a brain aneurysm rupture.

Virginia was born in Dillon on Christmas Day, 1926. The sixth of eight children, she grew up in a large ranching family where she lived until she married Ray Duffner on Dec. 21, 1952.

After a few short stops around the Dillon area, they moved to East Missoula where their first three children were born, and finally settled in Missoula to raise their family of four.

Together they built the family home where they have lived for 47 years. Through those years she was tirelessly committed to her home and family, and enjoyed her gardening to give away, her sewing to meet the needs she saw, and her time that was always available to listen to a friend or hold a child’s hand.

She found joy in life everyday and faced all the trials with a determined faith that overcame the challenges, and blessed the people around her in the process. Her quiet strength, dignity and courage were evident daily, even in her final hours, as she allowed others around her to be there for her and her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Madge Smith; brothers, Stanley, Roger and Dennis; and sister, Louise.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Raymond Duffner; sons, Tim(Lynne) and Keith(Peggy); and daughters, Vicki Henry(Terry) and Marilyn Stalder(Doug); brothers, Gilmer, Clyde Jr. and Jack; grandchildren, Sherry, Terry Jr., Jason, Ami, Kyna, Amanda, Matthew, Kayla, Kyle and Kathryn; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, at noon, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2512 Sunset Lane, Missoula.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Missoula Aging Services, 337 Stevens Avenue, Missoula, MT 59801.

Bonnie Dee Merrell

1909 - 2011

Bonnie Dee Merrell, Grandma Bonnie to five generations, passed away on Aug. 10, at the Renaissance Center, at the age of 102.

Bonnie was born on Jan. 29, 1909, to Willey and Lelia Cheney in Lima, where she was to spend the entire 102 years of her life.

She attended and graduated from the Lima Schools. On May 15, 1923, she was married to Max C. Merrell. Their union of 67 years resulted in eight children, 25 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

Her family was the center of her life, but she also enriched the lives of many others with gifts of baby blankets, aid to stranded motorists, meals for shut-ins, and working in many community organizations and the Lima Community church.

Her community service included years on the cemetery board, and a time as Lima’s mayor.

Bonnie worked at various jobs throughout her life, starting at the Union Pacific club house as a young woman, and later at the Club Café’ and the Peat Café’. She worked for many many years with her husband Max at the family owned Merrell Store.

After retiring from the store, she worked for the Lima school lunch program, and finished her working career at the local motel laundry at the age of 80. She left behind an admirable work ethic for later generations to follow.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband Max; two sons, Kenneth and Don; a daughter-in-law, Lois; one grandson and two great-grandchildren.

She is survived by Dee (Norma) Merrell, Carol (Gordon) Harball, Edith Reed, Anita (Baxter) Brown, Joyce Merrell, Lila (Jim) Harper, plus numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She will be greatly missed.

Services were held Tuesday, at 2 p.m., at the Lima Community Church, with a visitation prior to services. Graveside services and reception followed.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lima Community Church Ladies Aid, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Ralph Redfield

1930 - 2011

Ralph Redfield, Jr., 80, of Twin Bridges, passed away Aug. 8 at the Sheridan Hospital.

He was born Dec. 7, 1930, to Ralph and Clara Redfield, in California.

Bud was a cowboy in his younger years. In his midlife years he was a miner.

In 1966 he bought a small ranch and became a part-time rancher and a full time miner.

In the late 1990s, he retired from mining. Bud loved to read a lot, until his eyes got too bad. During his last few years he really enjoyed going up into the mountains with his family and his grandchildren.

He served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953 as a Staff Sergeant, and married Jeannette Keene, June 14, 1958, in Dillon.

He is survived by his wife, Jeannette; one daughter, Donna (Craig) Sprinkle, Dillon; four sons,

Jim Redfield, Roseville, Ohio, Wayne (Linda) Redfield, Twin Bridges, Fred Redfield, Dillon,

Jerry (Amanda) Redfield, Tampa Bay, Fla.; brothers,

Graveside services will be held Aug. 27, at 10 a.m.

at the Point of Rocks Cemetery.

A reception will follow at the Church of the Valley.

Patricia L. Clucas

1927 - 2011

Patricia L. Clucas passed away one day short of celebrating her 84th birthday.

She was born to Percy and Harriet (Martineau) Barney on Aug. 12, 1927, in Tacoma, Wash.

She lived in Elliston as a small child, and then moved to Butte with her parents where she attended grade school and Butte Central Girls High School.

Her various careers included working as a telegrapher for Union Pacific for eight years before taking time to raise her family.

Her third marriage was to William T. Clucas, and they were wed on her birthday in 1955, in Helena. Together they lived and raised their family in Lima where Pat was active at the St. Rose Catholic Church and PTA, and was a founding member of the Lima swimming pool.

She was the secretary and an EMT for the Lima Ambulance and Fire Department. Not to be denied a high school diploma, Pat enrolled in the GED program and graduated from Lima High School in 1968 with her second son, Fran.

In 1976, she and Bill moved to Pocatello, Idaho, where she was a Red Cross first aid instructor. In 1977 Pat enrolled at ISU Vo-Tech to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She graduated in 1978 with an LPN degree, and worked at the Bannack Memorial Hospital until moving back to Dillon in 1982.

She continued her nursing career at Barrett Hospital until her retirement in 1989. Not one to sit still, she then became active in the Dillon Hospice until 1995.

Pat enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and especially following her grandkids ball and track teams. She was the life of the party at family get-togethers. “G”, as she was known by some of the grandkids, was known to give the grandkids their Christmas goose a little early, as well as her spunky teasing, and making them one of her famous Chinese sandwiches.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband, William T. Clucas; and son, Bill Clucas.

She is survived by her sons, Mike (Sue) Jensen, Dillon; Fran (Shanni) Jensen, Lima, and Bob Clucas, Gig Harbor, Wash.; grandchildren, Dallas Jensen, Travis (Dawn) Jensen, Lance (Charlene) Jensen, Amanda (Corey) Harris, Adam Jensen, Kelsy Jensen-Coon, Casey Clucas and Katie Poppy, and eight great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with a prayer service at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, at BrundageFuneral Home.

A funeral mass will be held Friday, Aug. 19, at 12:10 pm, at St. Rose Catholic Church.

Memorials are should be made to the Lima Swimming Pool, Barrett Hospital Foundation, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Sylvan George Donegan

1927 - 2011

Sylvan George Donegan, Jr., began his final journey to heaven Aug. 3.

He was born May 22, 1927, in Twin Bridges, to Sylvan, Sr., and Effie Donegan, where his family history and hearts have always been rooted in the valley.

He attended school in Twin Bridges, and completed the necessary testing in the U.S. Marine Corps to receive his Twin Bridges High School diploma with the class of 1946.

He served his country with pride overseas during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1947 when he returned to Twin Bridges. He then married the love of his life, Dorothy Fulwood, March 6, 1948, and they made their home in Silver Star and Laurel. In 1951 they returned to Twin Bridges where they raised their two daughters, and were close to family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvan, Sr., and Effie (Todd) Donegan; his wife, Dorothy; and sisters, Wanda Birdsill and Della Triplett.

Surviving are his daughters, Carol Donegan, East Helena, and Sylvia and Rick Dulaney, Twin Bridges; four grandchildren, Debra Frances, Missouri, Ryan (Amy) Dulaney, Brandon, S. D., Garett (Nicole) Dulaney, Sioux Falls, S. D., and Dale (Patti) Lawyer, Soldotna, Alaska; four great-grandchildren, Simone and Jasmine, Missouri, and Landon and Tristan, South Dakota; and one great-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sylvans' family was one of his greatest pleasures, as well as friends, and the love of mining through several exploration projects. He also valued a sense of community and civic duty where he served as a council member and mayor of Twin Bridges for many years.

It was also his privilege to be a part of the Twin Bridges Volunteer Fire Department, served on the town development committee, and was a member of the Westgate Masonic Lodge No.27 for 58 years.

His work history included Victoria Mines, truck driving for a Canadian Co., Victor Chemical Mining Co., and the Montana State Highway Department as maintenance superintendent for the Butte division until his retirement in 1993.

Sylvan and Dorothy also enjoyed many years of traveling, especially time spent in Arizona, Washington and Alaska, and on numerous cruises. His love of the mountains and prospecting gave him many hours of enjoyment along with outdoor activities.

Dad you are at peace now, may you and mom forever ride your four-wheeler in the heavens above. God bless you forever.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Twin Bridges Fire/Rescue Department.

Military graveside services were held Saturday, Aug. 6, at 10 a.m. at the Twin Bridges cemetery with Rev. Ben Nardi officiating, and Masonic Lodge No.27 conducting rites. A luncheon was held at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant following the service.

Beth Leanore Meyers Kitchin

1915 - 2011

Beth Leanore Meyers Kitchin passed away on July 27, at Parkview Acres Care and Rehabilitation Center in Dillon, from heart failure.

She was born in her grandparents’ farmhouse in Dickey County, North Dakota, on Nov. 27, 1915.

Her parents James Guy Meyers and Mary Ann McKeague Meyers were farmers who relocated to Glendive, to homestead.

After graduating from Dawson County High School, Beth married Glenn Kitchin of Glendive in 1935; they had two children James O. Kitchin and Mary Jane (Janie) Petersen.

Beth and Glenn lived in several Montana towns early in their marriage while Glenn was involved in the grocery business. When Glenn returned from the Navy after World War II, they joined family in Gardiner and operated their own business.

They left Gardiner, spent time in Butte, and eventually moved to Deer Lodge. Beth graduated from Butte Business College and worked as assistant registrar of Motor Vehicles in Deer Lodge before her retirement.

She loved to travel and was proud to tell she’d visited Europe, Canada, and Mexico and all of the states except Hawaii.

When she was suddenly widowed in 1975, she moved to Dillon, and worked at the State Bank for a period while establishing her independence.

Until the last month of her 95 years, she continued to live a healthy, independent life. She enjoyed fishing and camping, was a wonderful seamstress, an avid reader, and a sports fan who rarely missed a televised football game or Braves baseball game.

Family and her true devotion to Christ and the Methodist Church were priorities in her life. She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church, and the Royal Neighbors of America.

Beth is survived by her daughter Janie and son-in-law Jim Petersen, Dillon; her daughter-in-law Myrna Kitchin, Missoula; eight grandchildren, James (Janet) Kitchin, Missoula; Keith (Jerry) Kitchin, Dutton; Kevin (Cristine) Kitchin, Shepherd; Denise (Jeff) Tribble, Missoula; Colleen (Doug) MacDonald, Missoula; Tod (Amber) Petersen, Bozeman; Jed (Amy) Petersen, Dillon; and Troy (Elizabeth) Petersen, Medford, Ore.; sister-in-law, Lorraine Meyers, Ellensdale, Wash.; several nieces and nephews.

Beth adored her 21 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren, and they adored “Granny.”

She was preceded in death by her husband and best friend Glenn; her son, Jim; her parents; a great-grandson James Glenn; a brother and sister.

Cremation has taken place, and Beth requested a family graveside service to be held at a later date in a family plot in Glendive.

Please consider memorials to the Methodist Church, Methodist Relief Fund, the Dillon Library, or the Shriner’s Hospital.

James D. Zink

1933 - 2011

James D. “Jim” Zink, 77, of Silverton, Ore., passed away in Silverton.

Jim was born in Boise, Idaho, during the depths of the Great Depression. He was the second child of Paul and Esther Zink. There were five children born to the family, Carol, James, Jack, Dale and Ed.

Jim’s parents and sister preceded him in death.

The family moved to Billings, and one of his recollections was entering first grade on the date Germany invaded Poland in 1939. Jim had a life-long interest in the history and events of World War II.

Later the family moved to Dillon, where Jim graduated from Beaverhead High School in 1953. He was co-captain of the championship football team for 1950-51. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army National Guard and served at Fort Knox.

In Dillon, Jim married Adele Bruce on July 31, 1955. He became “dad” to Ken and David Stahl. The family relocated to Laurel, where Jim attended college and worked at Allis-Chalmers of Billings.

Later, he was employed at the Farmer’s Union Central Exchange (Cenex) oil refinery at Laurel, and retired from there in 1995. Jim worked as an operator at Cenex and, even years after his retirement, could describe in detail each and every part of the plant. He had many friends there and was well respected.

Two daughters joined the family in Laurel, Laurie, born in 1961, and Jaime, in 1965.

Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing. He saw to it that his stepsons were trained in firearm safety at the Laurel Rod and Gun Club, and that all his children developed a love of the outdoors.

He had a keen interest in firearms, which he collected, and had his own reloading equipment. He would spend hours studying reloading manuals before loading ammo which he proudly shared with family and friends.

He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs. After Adele’s death in 2000, he relocated to Boise, to be closer to Jaime and her family, and the “fisher kids.” He later followed them to Silverton, Ore., where he enjoyed camping, looking at the ocean, and watching track, basketball and college football.

Family members he leaves behind include brothers Jack and Dale of Dillon, and Ed of Billings; stepsons, Ken Stahl and wife Carol, Albany, Ore., and David Stahl and wife Linda, Laurel; daughters, Laurie Zink and husband Steve Fogle, Corvallis, Ore., and Jaime Fuhrman and husband Roger, Silverton, Ore.; grandchildren, Kristen Stahl, Alisa Barksdale, Jody Stahl, Adam Fogle, Aimee Zink-Fogle, Ericka Dodge, James “Jeff” Fuhrman, and Madison Fuhrman. Jim also had two great-granddaughters, Kyleigh and Keira Barksdale.

Jim’s daughter Jaime and her family were loving and active caregivers for Jim since 2001.

Jim’s life was marked by decency, honesty and caring. He was proud of his work at Cenex, devoted to his family, and lived actively and independently until just before his death.

A service will be held at the Brundage Funeral Home Saturday, July 30.
